Penley, North Dakota State Finish Strong to Defeat Oakland 58-54

Box Score

ROCHESTER, Mich.--Jerri Penley rebounded in a miss with 52 seconds left for the eventual game-winning basket as North Dakota State defeated Oakland 58-54 in a Summit League women's basketball game played Monday, Feb. 4, before 705 spectators in the Athletics Center O'Rena.

NDSU (6-5 Summit, 11-10) recorded its first-ever conference road sweep including the win over IPFW on Saturday. The Bison put together back-to-back road wins for the second time this season, the previous coming at Idaho on Dec. 1 and Centenary on Dec. 8.

North Dakota State is scheduled to host IUPUI (7-4 Summit, 11-12) at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, in the Bison Sports Arena. The Jaguars defeated the Bison 59-54 in Indianapolis on Jan. 14.

Penley, a 6-foot-2 junior from Willis, Mich., played her first game in her home state and made it a memorable one.

After Penley rebounded in a Lisa Bue missed jumper, she recorded her career best seventh blocked shot of the game on Oakland's next trip down the floor to tie a NDSU single-game record. The Bison record was set most recently by Leah Klabo and Brandee Gibbs during the 2004 season. Lacey Johnson (2003) and Lisa Stamp (twice, 1985 and 1987) also share the record.

Oakland failed to cash in on a Hanna Reising three-point shot off the ensuing offensive rebound, along with a Melissa Jeltema layup following a Bison turnover with 26 seconds remaining.

Penley sealed the win with a layup with 3.9 seconds left after taking a pass from Amanda Girodat just past midcourt as the Golden Grizzlies tried to steal the ball. Girodat finished with 10 points and nine assists.

Penley finished with 16 points and a career-high 13 rebounds to record her second collegiate "double-double". She scored 12 of her game-high total in the second half as North Dakota State rallied back from a seven-point deficit.

North Dakota State trailed 49-44 with 5:46 left on an Anna Patritto layup. The Bison went on a 14-5 run down the stretch as Emily Moran, Girodat and Penley all contributed on offense. Moran scored 12 points and Bue added 11 as four Bison scored in double figures.

Oakland (6-4 Summit, 13-7) looking to bounce back from Saturday's 64-63 overtime loss to South Dakota State and jumped out to an early 20-8 lead with 10:52 remaining on a Melissa Jeltema layup off a pass from April Kidd following one of her five steals.

The Golden Grizzlies fast start was sparked by Jessica Pike, who scored the Golden Grizzlies first eight points and 10 of her team-high 14 in the opening period. Jeltema claimed 10 points and 10 rebounds for the "double-double", while Reising added 10 points.

However, North Dakota State rallied to within two points on a pair of occasions, at 27-25 following a Moran three-pointer and 29-27 on a Jill Zaruba traditional three-point play -- layup off a Bue pass and free throw. Oakland finished strong and took a 33-28 halftime lead. The Bison recorded its first win of the season after trailing at the half.

North Dakota State shot 42.9 percent from the field compared to 35.8 percent for the Golden Grizzlies. OU shot only 28.1 percent from the field in the second half. The Bison overcame 21 turnovers that led to 20 points for Oakland. NDSU held a 41-35 advantage on the boards led by Penley's 13, eight from Bue and six from Annika Walseth.
