Box Score FARGO, N.D.--Brenda Slyt scored 23 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead North Dakota State to a 75-72 double-overtime victory over Oral Roberts 75-72 in a Summit League women's basketball game played Saturday, March 1, before 1,709 spectators in the Bison Sports Arena.
With the win NDSU (11-6 Summit, 16-11) moved into a two-way tie for third place in the league standings with Oakland, a half-game behind second place Western Illinois.
The double-overtime game was the longest in both North Dakota State and Oral Roberts women's basketball history. The Bison had lost to the Golden Eagles in overtime, 73-68, in Tulsa to complete a two-game road swing to open conference play Dec. 10.
North Dakota State is scheduled to close out the regular season with Centenary College (1-15 Summit, 4-22) at 7 p.m. Monday, March 3. The Ladies played at South Dakota State on Saturday.
A traditional three-point play from Mariana Camargo put Oral Roberts (10-7 Summit, 16-12) ahead 70-67 with 3:50 left in the second overtime. Camargo led the ORU with 22 points.
However, the Golden Eagles didn't score for over three minutes after that.
North Dakota State's Jill Zaruba, Lisa Bue and Slyt strained to hit 3 of 6 free throws attempts to tie the game at 70-70 with 1:30 remaining.
Following a block and rebound from Zaruba, Bue hit a layup for a brief 72-70 lead at the 44 second mark before she was matched by Camargo with 34 seconds left.
Slyt took a pass from Amanda Girodat for a layup that put NDSU ahead 74-72 with 25 seconds left.
Zaruba came up with her second block and rebound combination on Oral Roberts' next trip down the floor. Zaruba came off the bench to score 10 points, grab eight rebounds and block a career-high six shots.
Slyt then hit a free throw seal the victory. The Bison connected on 23 of 29 attempts from the foul line for 79.3 percent, while Oral Roberts went 12 of 16 for 75 percent.
Slyt recorded her second collegiate "double-double" with the 23 points and 10 rebounds. Her other came against ORU with 21 and 10 on Dec. 10. Bue finished with 21 points and nine rebounds. Emily Moran, who hit several key three-pointers and free throws, scored 13 points.
Jenny Hardin and Janae Voelker both complimented Camargo with 13 points apiece. Voelker nailed key three-pointers near the end of regulation and the first overtime before fouling out.
The teams combined for 43 turnovers. NDSU scored a season-high 27 points off of 21 Oral Roberts' miscues.
North Dakota State shot 40 percent from field compared to 37.7 percent for the Golden Eagles. ORU hit 8 of 18 three-pointers and the Bison made 4 of 18. NDSU held a slim 41-39 edge in rebounding.
Oral Roberts led 30-26 at halftime, and the contest was tied at 61 following regulation and 67 at the end of the first overtime. The lead changed hands on 10 occasions and was tied eight times.
