Centenary Sweeps Doubleheader From North Dakota State 12-3, 3-1

SHREVEPORT, La.--Centenary pounded out 18 hits in the opener and three pitchers combined on a one-hitter in the nightcap for a 12-3, 3-1 doubleheader sweep of North Dakota State in Summit League baseball Saturday, May 3.

Centenary improved to 26-19 overall and 9-10 in The Summit League.  North Dakota State fell to 10-25 overall and 3-11 in the league.  The final game of the series is scheduled for 11 a.m. Sunday, May 4.

Centenary had a 5-2 lead in the opener before breaking the game open with seven unearned runs in the bottom of the eighth inning.  Tim Deering and Teddy Saenz were both 4-for-5 for the Gentlemen, and Saenz was one of five Gents with two RBIs.

Boone Whiting and Joe Hagen combined for five hitless innings in the second game before Luke Otto singled to lead off the NDSU sixth.  Otto scored on an error five batters later against Aaron Bronson, who pitched the final 1 2/3 innings to become Centenary's all-time saves leader.

NDSU pitcher Ben Mathiason (3-7) went all six innings in the loss, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits with three walks and two strikeouts.  Saenz and Alex Maldonado had RBI singles in the fourth that held up as the winning runs.

Five Bison players had multiple hits in the opener, led by Eric Nutzhorn's 3-for-4 game with two RBIs.  He hit run-scoring singles in the fourth and eighth innings.

Sebastian Miles and Kole Zimmerman both hit 2-for-5, while Kyle Harrison and Shannon Ekermans were 2-for-4.  Zimmerman extended his career doubles record to 46.

North Dakota State starter Matt Bowar (0-6) allowed seven runs on 14 hits with one strikeout and no walks in the opening-game loss.
