Box Score MURRAY, KY. ? The North Dakota State soccer team (2-0, 0-0 Summit) defeated Murray State (0-2) Sunday, 2-0. Junior Lorraine Thompson tallied a goal and an assist to lead the Bison to victory.
Murray State got a shot off in the first minute, but freshman goalkeeper Kalani Bertsch was there for the save. Bison senior Nicole Rand gave the Bison their only shot on goal in the first half in the tenth minute. Bertsch made two more saves in the first half to keep the score tied at 0-0 and a shot from Racer Sophie Hargreaves hit the crossbar in the 37th minute.
The Bison turned it on in the second half. Candice D'Arcangeli got the shooting started with a shot in the 50th minute that was saved by Murray State goalie Tara Isbell. 36 seconds later, Lorraine Thompson put a corner kick into the box and freshman Michelle Gaffaney was able to settle the ball and finish the shot to put the Bison up 1-0. It was Gaffaney's first career goal.
NDSU got two more shots on goal before Thompson buried a corner kick in the net in the 81st minute to give the Bison a 2-0 lead.
The Bison were outshot by the Racers, 15-9, but seven of the Bison shots were on goal compared to just four for the Racers. NDSU finished their season opening road trip with a 2-0 record. It is the ninth time in Bison soccer history that the team has opened with a 2-0 record.
“It's great to get out on the road and win twice,” said head coach Pete Cuadrado. “It's never easy to win on the road and both games we played were battles. I'm happy to come out with the results we did. I'm very proud of the team. We're off to a good start.”
The next game for the Bison is Friday, Aug. 29 at Creighton. The team then returns home to take on Minnesota on Sunday, Aug. 31 at 1 p.m.
