NDSU Soccer Ties Eastern Washington, 1-1

Box Score

Brookings, S.D. ? The North Dakota State soccer team tied Eastern Washington, 1-1, today at the Jackrabbit Invitational.  The Bison finished the tournament with a 0-1-1 record and now have a 3-3-1 record overall.  The tie against the Eagles was the first draw of the season for the Bison.  Michelle Gaffaney notched the second goal of her freshman campaign to lead the Bison.

On a windy afternoon, the Eagles took 29 shots in the first half to NDSU's nine.  Bison goalie Kalani Bertsch and the rest of the defense stepped up to hold the Eagles to only one goal.

Eastern Washington jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute after Lauren Koelzer put in a rebound from an Abbey Jensen blocked shot.

The Bison responded well when nine minutes later, Gaffaney scored off an assist from fellow freshman Kristen Whipple, who recorded her second assist of the season.

In the second half, the Eagles had a close chance when  Jocelyn Bement had a shot go off the post.  .  Bertsch made three saves to keep the score tied.

The game was still tied after 90 minutes of regulation, so it went into overtime.  Even though it was the first overtime game of the year for the Bison, the team is familiar was overtime games since they played five last season.

In the first overtime period, Marissa Wolfgram forced Eagle goalie Jessica Blessard to make a save and Bertsch made a save on an Abbey Jensen shot.

The Eagles outshot the Bison, 8-4, in the final overtime period, but Nicole Rand and Quin Ryan both had chances to score in the last two minutes.

“I was happy that we were able to equalize in the first half,” said head coach Pete Cuadrado.  “We got tired in the second half, but were able to try some new people in new positions.”

The Bison hit the road again next weekend to take on Nebraska in Lincoln on Friday, Sept. 19.  NDSU then travels to Northern Iowa on Sunday, Sept. 21.
