Box Score YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio--Kamryn Keys rushed for 146 yards and a touchdown to lead Youngstown State to a 32-24 win over North Dakota State in a Missouri Valley Football Conference game played before a crowd of 14,331 at Stambaugh Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 20.
Jabari Scott added 120 yards on the ground for a Youngstown State rushing attack that netted 340 yards. Brandon Summers was 7-of-12 passing for 101 yards and two touchdowns.
The Penguins (2-2, 1-1) cruised out to a 23-3 lead deep into the third quarter on a 12-yard touchdown pass from Summers to Ferlando Williams. But North Dakota State responded with an efficient eight-play, 80-yard drive that ended with an 18-yard touchdown catch by tight end Jerimiah Wurzbacher. The Bison (2-2,0-1) then recovered a fumble deep in Youngstown State territory and followed with a touchdown to bring the score to 23-17.
But Youngstown State never let go of the lead.
Running back Tyler Roehl ran for 104 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries for the Bison, while quarterback Nick Mertens was 23-of-38 passing for 296 yards with one touchdown and four interceptions. Roehl recorded his second 100-yard rushing effort of the season and eighth of his career. Kole Heckendorf caught a career-high nine passes for 111 yards. Heckendorf has caught at least one pass in 29 straight games and 36-of-37 in his career.
Linebacker Ramon Humber led the NDSU defense with 12 tackles including a career-high 10 solo stops, a forced fumble and one tackle for loss. It was Humber's third straight double-figure tackle game and seventh of his career. Free safety Nick Schommer added 11 tackles for his second straight double-figure tackle performance. Cornerback John Richardson picked off a pass, recovered a fumble and added four tackles.
