
Bison Too Much For Southern Utah in 76-53 Win

CEDAR CITY, Utah--Ben Woodside scored a game-high 24 points and Brett Winkelman and Mike Nelson added 17 apiece to lead North Dakota State to a 76-53 win at Southern Utah in Summit League men's basketball Thursday, Jan. 15.
North Dakota State improved to 11-5 overall and 6-1 in The Summit League to maintain a half-game lead over Oral Roberts, which won at IUPUI. Southern Utah slipped to 5-12 overall and 3-3 in the league.
North Dakota State led by as many as 15 points in the first half. Nelson and Josh Vaughan made 3-pointers on consecutive possessions to give NDSU a 29-14 advantage with 5:58 left.
It was 39-26 NDSU at halftime. Southern Utah closed within nine points at 53-44 on a Davis Baker free throw with 11:10 to play.
North Dakota State broke open the game 12-0 run over the next six minutes capped by Woodside's third of four 3-pointers that made it 65-44 with 6:41 to play.
NDSU shot 56 percent compared to 31 percent by the Thunderbirds. The Bison made 10 of 18 three-pointers against The Summit League's top-ranked 3-point defense.
North Dakota State outrebounded Southern Utah 38-29 led by Winkelman's 10 to complete his sixth double-double of the season.
John Clifford had 14 points, 15 rebounds and three blocks to lead Southern Utah and teammate Davis Baker added 11 points.
North Dakota State is scheduled to play UMKC at 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Mo. The Kangaroos are 6-13 overall and 2-4 in the league after beating South Dakota State 69-67 on Thursday.
