Box Score BROOKINGS, S.D.--Ben Woodside and Brett Winkelman combined for 59 points to lead North Dakota State to an 87-77 overtime win at South Dakota State in Summit League men's basketball Friday, Jan. 23, before a crowd of 3,629 at Frost Arena.
It was the sixth straight win for North Dakota State, which improved to 14-5 overall and 8-1 in The Summit League. South Dakota State fell to 8-13 overall and 3-6 in the league.
Woodside and Winkelman scored 31 of NDSU's 34 points in the second half, including four straight free throws by Woodside in the final 47 seconds to force overtime at 71-71.
NDSU was 3-for-3 from the field and made 10 of 12 free throws in overtime. The Bison scored 12 unanswered points in a three-minute span to put the game away.
North Dakota State led 37-36 at halftime and the Jackrabbits trailed until the 7:10 mark of the second half, but SDSU went ahead by as many as five in the closing minutes.
SDSU broke a 64-64 tie with baskets by Anthony Cordova and Kai Williams, and a Cordova free throw made it 69-64 with 2:15 left.
NDSU's Josh Vaughan cut the lead to three with a layup at the 1:45 mark, but a Clint Sargent layup pushed the SDSU lead back to 71-66. Vaughan made 1 of 2 free throws with 57 seconds left to start the Bison's 5-0 run to end regulation.
Woodside finished with a game-high 30 points and became NDSU's first player to go over 2,000 career points. He has 2,009 points in 104 games.
Winkelman ended with 29 points and passed Jeff Askew for fourth place on the NDSU scoring list with 1,711 points in 104 games. Winkelman is seven points shy of passing Joe Regnier for third place.
South Dakota native Michael Tveidt was the only other Bison player in double figures with 11 points.
SDSU had a 45-35 rebounding advantage including 18 offensive rebounds. SDSU's Williams had a game-high 10 rebounds and Winkelman led the Bison with nine.
Garrett Callahan led the Jackrabbits with 22 points, Cordova finished with 21 points and eight rebounds, and Sargent had 12 points.
The teams combined to shoot 6-for-35 from the 3-point line.
North Dakota State returns home to host Oakland on Thursday, Jan. 29, and IPFW next Saturday, Jan. 31.
