Box Score MACOMB, Ill. ? North Dakota State junior forward Quin Ryan scored twice to lead the Bison to a 2-1 win over Western Illinois on Sunday, Oct. 18. The Bison are now 7-6-2 overall and 4-1 in the Summit League. It is the most wins in league play for NDSU since joining in 2007. Western Illinois falls to 4-7-2 overall and 1-3-1 in league play.
NDSU got two early shots on goal from juniors Candice D'Arcangeli and Abbey Stratton, but Leatherneck goalie Laura Atkinson saved both attempts. Ryan gave the Bison a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute, putting a shot into the lower right off a corner kick from Stratton.
Western Illinois tied the game in the 30th minute when Alison Smyth put in a header off a cross from Nora Potempa.
Despite giving up the first half goal, the Bison outshot the Leathernecks, 11-3, in the half and put seven shots on goal.
Ryan added her second goal just after halftime off an assist from D'Arcangeli. It was Ryan's third goal of the season and first multi-goal game since notching a hat trick as a freshman.
The Leathernecks outshot the Bison in the second half, 7-4, but sophomore goalie Kalani Bertsch made four saves and the defense stepped up to keep the home side from recording a tying goal.
The Bison return to Fargo for their final two home games of the 2009 season next weekend. On Friday, Oct. 23, NDSU will host Southern Utah at 3 p.m. Sunday's noon game against UMKC will be senior day for Becky Iwanicki, Laura Murphy and Lorraine Thompson.
