Box Score FARGO, N.D.--Forward Brett Winkelman had 24 points, seven rebounds and four steals to lead North Dakota State to an 87-49 rout of UMKC in Summit League men's basketball Thursday, Feb. 12, before a crowd of 3,633 at the Bison Sports Arena.
It was the 11th straight win overall and 13th in a row at home for North Dakota State, which improved to 19-5 overall and 13-1 in The Summit League. UMKC fell to 6-20 overall and 2-11 in the league.
The Bison still have a 2 1/2-game lead over Oral Roberts, which held on to beat Western Illinois 49-46. The Golden Eagles trailed by five at halftime but started the second half on a 13-2 run to lead for good.
Winkelman was 10-for-13 from the field. He scored 17 points by halftime as the Bison jumped out to a 44-24 lead at intermission.
UMKC was within five points at 15-10 on a Fred Ford jumper at the 13:07 mark, but NDSU went on a 22-3 run over the next six minutes to open a 37-13 lead.
The Kangaroos missed nine straight field goals and NDSU scored 14 unanswered points before a Bakari Lewis 3-pointer ended the drought.
The Bison started the second half on a 15-2 run and led by as many as 43 points on a Freddy Coleman 3-point play with 8:04 left in the game.
Guard Ben Woodside added 15 points, five rebounds and five assists for NDSU, which played its reserves for the final 8:16 of the game. The Bison got 34 points 24 rebounds off the bench.
Eric Carlson had nine points and four rebounds, Dejuan Flowers and Josh Vaughan had six points apiece, and Coleman, Vaughan and Flowers each grabbed five boards.
NDSU shot 59 percent from the floor and had a 46-33 rebounding advantage.
UMKC's Latreze Mushatt scored 12 points and Dustin Dibble added 10 for the Kangaroos. They shot 26 percent from the field (17-for-65).
North Dakota State hosts Southern Utah at 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 14. The Thunderbirds are 8-16 overall and 6-7 in the league after a 74-69 loss at South Dakota State on Thursday.
