Bison Seniors Go Out in Style With 96-74 Rout of South Dakota State

FARGO, N.D.--Ben Woodside had 32 points and six assists to lead North Dakota State to a 96-74 victory over South Dakota State in Summit League men's basketball Tuesday, Feb. 17, before a season-high crowd of 5,790 at the Bison Sports Arena.

North Dakota State improved to 20-6 overall and 14-2 in The Summit League, two full games ahead of second-place Oral Roberts.  South Dakota State dropped to 12-16 overall and 7-9 in the league.

It was the final home game for five NDSU seniors.  They were 48-5 in the Bison Sports Arena the past four seasons.

Woodside and fellow senior Mike Nelson each made four 3-pointers and NDSU was 12-for-21 from the arc altogether.

North Dakota State led 45-33 at halftime despite SDSU's 58 percent shooting, then started the second half on a 16-2 run.  The Bison made five 3-pointers in the first five minutes of the period and the Jackrabbits were no closer than 19 the rest of the way.

Nelson finished with 18 points and six rebounds, senior forward Brett Winkelman had 10 points and six rebounds, sophomore forward Michael Tveidt had 12 points and four rebounds, and senior center Lucas Moormann had nine points and four rebounds.

Winkelman, now with 1,823 career points, moved into sole possesion of second place on the NDSU scoring list ahead of former record holder Denver TenBroek and behind Woodside's 2,144.

Garrett Callahan scored 19 points to lead SDSU and teammates Dale Moss and Anthony Cordova chipped in 15 points apiece.

North Dakota State is scheduled to close the regular season with three straight road games beginning Saturday, Feb. 21, at Wisconsin-Milwaukee as part of the seventh annual ESPNU BracketBusters event.

The Panthers are 14-11 overall and 9-6 for fifth place in the Horizon League heading into a Wednesday night home game with nationally ranked Butler.
