Bison Dominate South Dakota State in 36-5 Victory

BROOKINGS, S.D. - The North Dakota State wrestling team won nine straight bouts en route to a dominating 36-5 victory over South Dakota State at Frost Arena Friday night.  The Bison won two bouts by fall and three by major decision.  With the victory, the Bison improve to 5-9-1 overall and 2-3 in the Western Wrestling Conference.  South Dakota State is now 9-10-1 overall and 0-5 in WWC action.

Sophomore Tyler Hemmesch led off the action at heavyweight with a pin of Jason Stripling to give the Bison a 6-0 lead.  Freshman Justin Solberg followed with a pin of his own, downing Alan Marvin at the 4:03 mark in the second period of the 125 pound bout.

At 133, freshman Trent Sprenkle blew open his match against Brock Edgar in the third period, tallying a takedown and two near falls en route to a 12-2 major decision.

Senior Gabriel Mooney won his third straight match, as he used a reversal in the second period and a 4 minute and 26 second advantage in riding time to win a 5-3 decision over Adam Everson at 141 pounds.

At 149, junior Ryan Adams started strong, tallying two takedowns in the first period against Dustin Walraven.  He used two more takedowns, a reversal and a riding time advantage to win an 11-3 major decision and give NDSU a 23-0 lead.

Sophomore Andrey Patselov saw his first action as a starter at 157 pounds tonight against Weston Blasius.  After a scoreless first period, Patselov earned an escape and a takedown in the second.  He used two more takedowns in the third period to hang on for the 7-4 win.

Sophomore Vince Salminen moved up a weight class tonight to take on Weston Ginther at 165 pounds.  Salminen jumped out to a big early lead, going up 6-1 in the first period.  He notched four more takedowns in the last two periods en route to a 16-4 major decision and a 30-0 lead for the Bison.

At 174, senior Adam Aho used a takedown in each period plus a 2:18 riding time advantage to take an 8-3 decision over Justin Retallic.

Sophomore Kenny Moenkedick jumped out to an early 4-1 lead on David Michaud at 184 pounds.  Moenkedick was able to notch a key reversal 30 seconds into the third period.  Michaud closed the gap to 6-5 with 10 seconds to go, but Moenkedick held on for the 6-5 decision.

In the final bout of the night, freshman Drew Ross wrestled Tyler Sorenson, who is ranked No. 13 in the country by InterMat.  Sorenson tallied four near falls in the first period en route to an 18-3 technical fall and South Dakota State's only points of the night.

The Bison now return to Fargo to host No. 21 Northern Iowa on Sunday, Feb. 22.  The Bison seniors will be recognized for their efforts at the final regular season match against the Panthers.
