Box Score TULSA, Okla.--Ben Woodside scored 29 points and made 7 of 8 free throws in the final 34.9 seconds as North Dakota State beat Oral Roberts 75-72 in Summit League men's basketball Saturday, Feb. 28, before a crowd of 8,996 at the Mabee Center.
North Dakota State (23-6, 16-2) won its first outright conference championship since 1981 in the North Central Conference and clinched the No. 1 seed for next weekend's Summit League tournament. NDSU will play No. 8 Centenary in the 6 p.m. quarterfinal game Saturday, March 7.
Oral Roberts (16-14, 14-4) had a 35-game home conference winning streak snapped. The Golden Eagles, winners of the last four regular-season championships, will have the No. 2 seed and face No. 7 South Dakota State in the 8:30 p.m. quarterfinal on March 7.
Woodside was 10-for-11 from the free-throw line. He made two with 11.3 seconds left to go ahead 72-69, two more with 5.5 seconds left to make it 74-71, and the second of two free throws with 2.4 seconds left for the final margin.
ORU forward Kevin Ford's inbounds pass three-quarters the length of the court was deflected away and controlled by the Bison as time expired.
The Golden Eagles led 40-34 at halftime and led by eight midway through the second half before NDSU battled back.
Michael Tveidt got a defensive rebound and made a 3-pointer on the ensuing possession to put the Bison ahead 66-65 with 2:50 to play.
On the next possession, Tveidt blocked Kelvin Sango and followed up a Woodside miss in transition to put NDSU ahead by three.
Dominique Morrison's basket with 42 seconds left gave ORU a 69-68 lead before Woodside went to the line with 34.9 seconds left. His two free throws put NDSU ahead for good.
The Bison trailed for more than 36 minutes altogether. They led 27-25 with 9 1/2 minutes before intermission, but Oral Roberts answered with a 13-0 run to build its biggest lead of the night, 38-27.
Woodside added seven assists and five rebounds. He set a new NDSU single-season record for points with 668, passing former record holder Denver TenBroek, who scored 666 in the 2002-03 season.
NDSU's Brett Winkelman finished with 21 points and nine rebounds, and Tveidt had three 3-pointers in a 17-point effort.
Robert Jarvis scored 23 points to lead four ORU players in double figures. Morrison finished with 17 points and Ford and Sango had 10 apiece.
NDSU was 26-for-58 overall and 5-for-13 from the arc. Oral Roberts was 25-for-57 overall and 4-for-12 from the arc. Both teams were 18-for-25 from the free-throw line. ORU had a 40-29 rebounding advantage.
