Free-Throw Shooting Carries Bison Past Centenary in League Quarterfinals, 83-77

SIOUX FALLS, S.D.--North Dakota State made 14 of its last 16 free throws and the Bison edged Centenary 83-77 in the Summit League men's basketball quarterfinals Saturday, March 7, before a crowd of 5,481 at Sioux Falls Arena.

It was the fifth straight victory for North Dakota State, which improved to 24-6 and advanced to Monday's semifinal round to play IUPUI or Southern Utah.  Centenary ended its season 8-23 overall.

NDSU's Brett Winkelman scored a game-high 30 points including 12 of 13 free throws, and Ben Woodside scored 23 points, making 11 of 14 free throws.  The Bison were 28-for-41 at the line altogether.

North Dakota State led by as many as 21 points late in the first half, but Centenary shot 61 percent in the second half to battle back from a 48-29 halftime deficit.

Chase Adams scored 22 of his team-high 26 points after intermission, including four straight 3-pointers in one early stretch of the second half to pull within 58-44.  The last 3-pointer started a 13-0 run that brought the Gents within 58-54.

Adams had five points on on 10-2 run that gave Centenary its first lead of the game, 68-67 with 6:04 left to play.  It was 70-69 before the Bison scored their final 14 points at the free-throw line.

Mike Nelson was the only other double-figure scorer for NDSU with 12 points.  The Bison shot 48.1 percent overall and had a 39-21 rebounding advantage led by Winkelman's eight.

Nick Stallings had 23 points for Centenary and David Perez and Gary Redus scored 10 apiece.  The Gents had 11 steals and scored 22 points off turnovers.

Monday's 6 p.m.semifinal game will be televised by Kansas City Metro Sports and carried live on Cable One Channel 44 in Fargo.
