Box Score 2 FARGO, N.D.--Cliff Shepard hit a two-out, two-run double in the 13th inning to lift Centenary to a 6-5 victory over North Dakota State in the second game of a Summit League baseball doubleheader Saturday, May 2, at Newman Outdoor Field.
North Dakota State put the tying run at third and the winning run at first in the bottom of the 13th, but Derek Dalzell struck out Bison third baseman Kenny Beese to end the 3 hour, 58 minute game, which was scheduled for seven innings.
Dalzell (2-0) pitched five innings of relief for the Gents (30-11, 13-5).  He allowed two runs on three hits, struck out four and walked two.
North Dakota State (12-23, 6-10) jumped out to a 3-0 lead through three innings, but Centenary tied it in the sixth with a three-run homer by Tell Ross.
NDSU reliever Anthony Kliniske came on to strike out seven batters in 4 1/3 innings of relief, but left the game in the 11th after an RBI double by Ricky Imperiali and a walk to Travis Leversen.
Jeff Kyllo (0-1) ended the inning with a strikeout and groundout, and the Bison tied the game in the bottom of the 11th.
Eric Nutzhorn led off with a single and moved to second on a Kyle Harrison bunt.  Pinch runner Ben Bruggeman moved to third on a dropped fly ball in right field and scored unearned on Beese's sacrifice fly.
Harrison and Max Casper had two hits apiece for NDSU.  Leversen was 3-for-5 with two runs, and Shepard and Ross both finished 2-for-6 for the Gents.
Centenary won the opening game of the doubleheader 10-3 thanks to a second straight complete game on the mound.  Stephen Tromblee struck out six and scattered seven hits in nine innings to improve to 5-1 on the year.
Shepard was 3-for-5 and drove in four runs, including a two-run double in Centenary's four-run fourth inning.  He also hit a two-run homer in the ninth and was a triple shy of hitting for the cycle.
Five other players each had two hits for the Gents.  Zach Wentz was 2-for-4 to lead the Bison attack.
NDSU starter Mark Ries dropped to 1-4 with the loss.  Ries allowed six runs, five earned, on eight hits with one strikeout and no walks in four innings.
Centenary, which won its sixth and seventh straight league games, moved within a game-and-a-half of second place behind Southern Utah.
NDSU fell three games out of fourth place for the final playoff spot behind South Dakota State, which has also won seven straight in league play.
North Dakota State and Centenary are scheduled to finish their four-game series with a single nine-inning game at 1 p.m. Sunday, May 3.
