
38th Annual Bison Athletic Hall of Fame Class Will Be Inducted October 2nd

North Dakota State University will induct its 38th annual class of seven new members into the Bison Athletic Hall of Fame and its third national championship team into the Bison Athletic Hall of Champions on Friday, Oct. 2nd. The addition of the seven new members will bring the number of individuals enshrined to 231.
The newest members of the Hall are the 1969 NDSU national championship football team represented by co-captain and middle linebacker STU HELGASON; All-America volleyball middle hitter and basketball player JEN MILLER (HUME) (1979-82); NCAA Division II national champion wrestler RICK GOEB (1985-88); All-America setter BECKY SCHULZE (1986-89); men's basketball standout DAN WILBERSCHEID (1984-88); All-America track & field performer LISA RISTAU-ECKROTH (1987-91); All-America volleyball middle hitter BRENDA SCHULTZ FOTI (1987-90), and All-America inside linebacker STEVE GARSKE (1980-1983).
The announcement was made by Hall of Fame committee chairman LEE PETERSEN.
The induction will take place at the Holiday Inn in Fargo. Lunch will begin at 11 a.m. with the induction ceremonies to start at 11:30 a.m.
A limited number of tickets are available from the NDSU Athletic Media Relations Office (701-231-7197) for a cost of $25 per ticket.
The group will also be recognized at the homecoming football game on October 3rd between NDSU and Illinois State.
Here's a look at the 38th annual class:
1969 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP FOOTBALL TEAM--North Dakota State University steamrolled the University of Montana 30-3 in the Camellia Bowl in a meeting between the No. 1 and 2 teams in the nation ... NDSU completed the season with a 10-0 record under the direction of head coach Ron Erhardt ... It is one of 13 undefeated seasons in school history and part of five unbeaten regular seasons from 1965 to 1970 that Erhardt helped to engineer ... That 1969 season was part of a school record 35 games without a defeat achieved from 1968 to 1971 that included three postseason bowl games ... Any doubt to the Bison grip on the top slot in 1969 was disspelled by the overwhelming display of the Fargo team on that December day in Sacramento ... Known as a physical, running team, NDSU utilized an aerial attack as the Bison finished with a total of 234 passing yards and 421 yards in total offense against the Grizzlies ... The Bison won an unprecedented sixth straight North Central Conference championship ... The 1969 NDSU team featured first team all-Americans in running back Paul Hatchett and defensive back Joe Cichy; second team All-American Steve Krumrei, while six other Bison earned honorable mention All-America accolades including Bruce Grasamke, Bob Hyland, Tim Mjos, Marv Mortenson and Chuck Wald ... Three NDSU players -- Tim Mjos, Joe Roller and Chuck Wald -- went to the National Football League ... Ten Bison players earned first team all-conference honors ... A total of 13 players from this undefeated team have been inducted into the Bison Athletic Hall of Fame, along with four members of the coaching staff and several administrators and support staff.
JEN MILLER, Volleyball middle hitter/basketball forward (1979-82)--North Dakota State University's first volleyball All-American, earning the Collegiate Volleyball Coaches Association first team honors in 1982 ... Led the Bison volleyball team coached by Donna Palivec to its first NCAA playoff appearance in 1982 ... Two-time all-North Central Conference selection in 1981 and 1982 ... An academic All-NCC selection in 1982 ... Holds NDSU season and career records for hitting percentage and ranks 10th in kills (1,436) ... Played basketball for Amy Ruley as a freshman before concentrating on volleyball ... Moved to New York Mills, Minn., from California in 1973 ... RICK GOEB, Wrestling, 126 pounds (1985-88)--The 1988 NCAA national champion at 126 pounds on NDSU's first Division II national championship under the direction of Bucky Maughan ... Three-time All-American for the Bison ...Three-time North Central Conference placewinner ... Compiled a 26-8 record during the 1988 NCAA Division II national championship season ... All-American in both 1987 (5th) and 1986 (7th) ... Bison had a dual record of 33-3 during his three years ... Finished 2nd, 3rd, and 2nd in the North Central Conference over his three years at NDSU after transferring from Oklahoma State ... His career record at NDSU was 64-25 (15-10, 23-7, and 26-8) ... Three-time Minnesota state wrestling champion at Anoka High School ... Finished undefeated with 101 straight wins ... Graduated from NDSU in 1989, earned his master's degree from Northern Colorado and received his Ph.D. from North Dakota ... Assistant wrestling coach at NDSU in 1989 and assistant wrestling/strength coach at Northern Colorado in 1990 ... Head wrestling coach at St. Cloud State from 1991-1994 ... Three-time Academic All-NCC selection ... Currently listed as the 12th leading scorer in NDSU history with 1,401 points ... Averaged 12.5 ppg over his career with a 16 ppg average his senior year ... Sixth leading rebounder in school history with 731 boards and tied for sixth in career blocks (68) ... 11th in field goals made (572) and attempted (1138) ...Averaged 6.5 rebounds per game during 112-game career ... Upon graduation, Wilberscheid ranked 1st in games started (110), 4th in rebounding and blocked shots (68), 6th in points and the top 10 in both field goals made and attempted ... Winner of the 1992 North Dakota NCAA Woman of the Year Award ... Named to CoSIDA College Division Academic All-America second team ... An 11-time NCAA Division II All-American in track & field (6 outdoor, 5 indoor)... STEVE GARSKE, Football, Inside Linebacker (1980-83)--Recruited to play at North Dakota State University by Earle Solomonson and played for Don Morton, both members of the Bison Athletic Hall of Fame ... Made the traveling squad and started one game as a freshman ... Played in the NCAA playoffs in both 1981 and 1982 ... Member of the 1983 NCAA Division II national championship team ... Associated Press first team Little All-American in 1982 as a junior; first team All-NCC in 1982 and Most Valuable Linebacker in the NCC ... Leading tackler (116) for the 12-1 Bison team that advanced to NCAA Division II semifinals ... His 91 assisted tackles and 25 solos were both team highs ... Top defensive point-getter (650) despite missing two regular season games ... Suffered a shoulder injury in mid-season and missed entire 1983 spring ...
