Bison Surge Past Jackrabbits in Second Half, 79-67

FARGO, N.D. - Eric Carlson scored a career-high 23 points and North Dakota State surged past South Dakota State early in the second half for a 79-67 win in Summit League men's basketball Friday, Jan. 15, before a crowd of 4,313 at the Bison Sports Arena.

Sam Sussenguth scored a career-best 16 points for the Bison (6-10, 3-3 Summit League), who had lost six of their last seven.  He scored 13 in the second half.

South Dakota native Michael Tveidt had a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds for NDSU, and Josh Vaughan scored 14 points with a game-high six assists.

Garrett Callahan scored 15 points and Anthony Cordova 14 for the Jackrabbits (9-9, 5-2), whose four-game winning streak was snapped.

Trailing 42-34 at intermission, North Dakota State started the second half with a 13-2 run capped by Vaughan's 3-pointer that made it 47-44 with 15:40 left.

SDSU went ahead 50-49 on a Nate Wolters layup at the 14-minute mark, but the Bison answered with a 3-point play by Austin Pennick and never trailed again.  Pennick had eight points and four assists.

Sussenguth had six points on a 12-4 run that broke open a one-point game and gave the Bison a 72-63 lead with 3:18 to play.  He added eight rebounds and two blocks for NDSU.

The Bison had a 36-33 rebounding advantage and outshot the Jackrabbits 48 to 42 percent.

It was NDSU's seventh straight win over SDSU, and it was the fifth straight in Fargo.

North Dakota State is scheduled to host first-place Oakland on Thursday, Jan. 21, and IPFW next Saturday, Jan. 23.  Game time is 7 p.m. both nights at the Bison Sports Arena.
