
Oakland Takes Advantage of NDSU Miscues, Holds Off Late Rally For 54-52 Road Win

FARGO, N.D.--Oakland University scored 24 points off of 29 North Dakota State University turnovers and held off a late rally to post a 54-52 Summit League road victory over NDSU before 343 spectators in the Bison Sports Arena on a blustery Monday, Jan. 25. OU won for the third straight time in Fargo.
North Dakota State (10-9, 5-4 Summit) is scheduled to play Centenary College (1-19, 0-9 Summit) at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 30, in the Gold Dome at Shreveport.
The Golden Grizzlies (9-11, 6-3 Summit) outscored the Bison 18-6 over the first 9-1/2 minutes of the second half to build a 46-31 lead with 10:36 left on an Anna Patritto layup the result of a Sharise Calhoun steal.
NDSU committed nine of its 15 second half turnovers over that span and only attempted six field goals. OU had only five second-half turnovers and 14 overall. The Golden Grizzlies scored 16 points off of turnovers in the second half.
Bethany Watterworth, Hanna Reising, Stacey Farrell, Victoria Lipscomb and Patritto all scored during the Oakland run. Watterworth netted six of her game-high 14 points to spark the run and finished as the only OU player in double-figures. Watterworth also made four key free throws down the stretch. Reising had 11 points off the bench, where Oakland held a 20-5 advantage.
North Dakota State regrouped, making a late charge outscoring the Golden Grizzlies 21-8 and had the last possession to tie the game. However, the Bison didn't get a shot attempt off in the final seconds.
Abby Plucker, who led the Bison with 13 points, converted a trio of conventional three-point plays over the final 8:45. She hit a pair of driving layups and short jumper, along with all three free throws to cut into the deficit. Her final three-point play cut the Oakland lead to 53-49 with 1:11 left.
After Melissa Jeltema made one of two free throws, Ashley Samuelson hit a three-point with 12 seconds remaining. Following a missed free throw with 9.1 seconds left, NDSU committed a turnover on its final possession.
Samuelson scored 10 points and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds to record her first double-double of the season and fourth double-double of her career. Janae Burich scored 11 points and matched a career-high with six rebounds. The Bison held a 35-30 rebounding advantage.
North Dakota State made 46.5 percent from the field compared to 38.9 percent for Oakland. The Golden Grizzlies made 11 of 17 free throws compared to 8 of 11 for NDSU.
