Vaughan, Bison Shoot Past UMKC in Second Half, 73-69

KANSAS CITY, Mo.--Josh Vaughan had game highs of 19 points and eight rebounds to lead North Dakota State to a 73-69 victory over UMKC in Summit League men's basketball Tuesday, Jan. 26, at the Swinney Rec Center.

Vaughan made three of his four 3-pointers and had 14 points in the second half as the Bison came back from a 12-point halftime deficit.  NDSU was 7 of 9 from the arc and shot 64 percent overall after the break.

The Bison (7-12, 4-5) made six of their first seven 3-pointers in the second half capped by Michael Tveidt's go-ahead basket at the 9:23 mark that gave NDSU a 55-52 lead.

Tveidt had 18 points and Eric Carlson added 13 for the Bison, who finished the game 9-for-16 from behind the arc and 16-for-21 from the free-throw line.

Trey McKinney-Jones led UMKC with 18 points, Jay Cousinard scored 15 and Kirk Korver had 11.  The Kangaroos (9-11, 3-6) outrebounded NDSU 31-28.

North Dakota State led by as many as four in the first half, but UMKC scored 16 unanswered points over a 4 1/2 minute span to go ahead 32-20 with 2:12 left before halftime.

The Bison missed their last 11 field goal attempts of the first half after a Tveidt jumper at the 8:03 mark.  NDSU got four points at the free-throw line in the final two minutes and UMKC led 36-24 at the break.

After Tveidt's go-ahead 3-pointer midway through the second half, the Bison led by as many as six before UMKC got back within 66-64 with 1:15 left to play.

Vaughan made a long 3-pointer to beat the shot clock with 38.8 seconds left after a Bison timeout, and he extended NDSU's lead to seven with a pair of free throws on the next possession.

Korver made three free throws with less than 2.9 seconds to play to make it 72-69, but Carlson made a free throw with 2.1 left and got his own rebound to run out the clock.

North Dakota State will continue its three-game road trip at Oral Roberts at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 28.  The Golden Eagles are 11-10 overall and third in The Summit League with a 6-3 record.
