Baker Carries Southern Utah Past North Dakota State in Overtime, 85-79

CEDAR CITY, Utah--Davis Baker scored a career-high 34 points including two key 3-pointers in overtime to lead Southern Utah to a 85-79 victory over North Dakota State in Summit League men's basketball Thursday, Jan. 7, at Centrum Arena.

Baker made five of his six 3-pointers after halftime, including one that tied the game at 63 with 4:35 left in regulation after Southern Utah (5-10, 1-3) trailed by seven.

Josh Vaughan scored a career-high 28 points for the Bison, who led 63-56 with 5:40 to play. Southern Utah scored seven straight points to get within one and went ahead 65-64 on Scott Friel's putback with 4:04 left.

North Dakota State (5-9, 2-3) tied it on a Sam Sussenguth free throw at the 3:49 mark, and it was 69-69 with 33 seconds left in regulation.  NDSU missed two chances in the final 10 seconds and Friel's missed runner at the buzzer sent the game to overtime.

Southern Utah was 6-for-6 from the free-throw line in the final 1:24 of overtime to keep NDSU at bay.  SUU finished 10 of 15 from the line compared to 22-for-31 by the Bison.

SUU reserves Dallin Bachynski and Jackson Stevenett combined for eight straight points on a 10-0 run midway through the first half that broke the game open.  The Thunderbirds led by as many as 13 points twice before halftime and it was 39-30 at the break.

Baker was 7-for-9 and had 15 points in the first half for SUU, which shot 58.6 percent before halftime.  Matt Hodgson added 12 points for the Thunderbirds, who finshed the game 51.6 percent compared to 38.8 percent for NDSU.

North Dakota State started the second half on an 8-2 run to get within three.  The Bison went on an 11-2 run over a five-minute span capped by Nate Zastrow's corner 3-pointer that put NDSU back ahead 52-49.

Michael Tveidt had 19 points for North Dakota State, Eric Carlson scored 11, and the Bison got seven points apiece from Zastrow, Sussenugth and Austin Pennick.

Sussenguth grabbed a game-high nine rebounds for NDSU, but the Bison were outrebounded 44-35.

North Dakota State is scheduled to play at Iowa State on ESPNU at 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 9.  The Cyclones are 10-4 after an 86-65 loss to Duke on Wednesday night.
