Vaughan's 22 Not Enough as Bison Fall Short at Iowa State, 73-71

Box Score

AMES, Iowa--Josh Vaughan scored a game-high 22 points but his potential game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer rimmed off as North Dakota State lost 73-71 at Iowa State in men's college basketball Saturday, Jan. 9, before a crowd of 12,937 at Hilton Coliseum.

Vaughan was 8-for-18 from the field and made 6 of 11 from behind the arc, one shy of the NDSU school record.  He has scored 50 points in the last two games for North Dakota State, which dropped to 5-10 with its sixth loss in seven games.

NDSU trailed by as many as 10 points early in the second half, but the Bison tied the game at 53 with 12:13 left on a Michael Tveidt basket that capped a 7-0 run.

The Bison went ahead 59-56 with 9:04 to play, but Iowa State (11-4) took back the lead with seven straight points.

Charles Boozer's steal and layup gave the Cyclones a 67-62 lead, but NDSU tied it at 67 inside the 3-minute mark with a Tveidt 3-pointer and two free throws by Austin Pennick, who was limited to six minutes in the second half with four fouls.

Lucca Staiger's third 3-pointer of the game put ISU up 70-67, and the Cyclones answered a Tveidt layup with another 3-pointer from Boozer that made it 73-69.

Pennick scored an open layup with 44.9 seconds left to make it a two-point game, and Iowa State missed a 3-pointer on its final possession to set up NDSU's last shot.

North Dakota State had a 47-39 rebounding advantage against the taller Cyclones, including 10 rebounds apiece from Tveidt, Eric Carlson and Sam Sussenguth, who matched a career high.

Carlson approached a triple double with 17 points and eight assists, Tveidt finished with 13 points, and Pennick scored 10.

NDSU shot 39 percent from the floor and was 7 of 19 from the 3-point line.  Iowa State shot 41 percent and was 9 of 18 from the arc.

The Cyclones were 12 of 21 at the foul line.  NDSU made 6 of 7 free throws.

Boozer finished with 19 points for Iowa State, preseason All-American Craig Brackins had 15 points, 11 rebounds and three assists, and Staiger finished with 10 points.

North Dakota State is home for its next three games beginning Friday, Jan. 15, against South Dakota State.  The Jackrabbits were 8-8 overall and 4-1 in The Summit League entering Saturday night's game at Southern Utah.
