Box Score BROOKINGS, S.D.--Eric Carlson had career highs of 24 points and 12 rebounds as North Dakota State outlasted South Dakota State 90-85 in double overtime Saturday, Feb. 13.
Josh Vaughan and Nate Zastrow scored 20 points each for the Bison (10-14, 7-7 Summit), and each kept their team alive with big 3-pointers.
The Bison led by eight at halftime, but the Jackrabbits led most of the second half before Zastrow's 3-pointer with 4.5 seconds left tied the game at 66 and forced overtime.
Vaughn's 3-pointer with 3.3 seconds left in the first extra period tied it at 74. The Bison never trailed in the second overtime, with Carlson scoring eight points.
Clint Sargent led the Jackrabbits (13-12, 9-5) with 24 points. Garrett Callahan had 11 points and Kai Williams and Nate Wolters 10 each.
Three players fouled out for each team and the teams combined to attempt 75 free throws. SDSU was 34-for-45 at the line and NDSU was 25-for-30.
North Dakota State led 29-21 at halftime after playing its best defensive half of the year. NDSU held South Dakota State to five field goals and 21 percent shooting.
But SDSU went on a 15-4 run capped by a steal and go-ahead 3-pointer from Callahan followed by a Williams three-point play that put the Jacks up 39-35.
South Dakota State led by as many as seven with 5:43 left in regulation.
NDSU was down 64-60 when Zastrow went to the foul line with 23.9 seconds left. He made his first to make it a one-possession game, and his second bounced off and lodged between the rim and glass.
The jumpball went to NDSU, and a deadball foul on the ensuing inbounds play sent Vaughan to the line to make two free throws and it was 64-63.
Michael Palarca beat the Bison full-court press for an uncontested layup that made it 66-63 with 19.4 seconds left. Zastrow used one shot fake to elude a defender and made the tying basket from the right wing.
SDSU missed long 3-point shots to win in regulation and at the end of the first overtime.
Zastrow made five 3-pointers en route to a career-high 20 points. The Bison were 9 of 19 from the arc compared to 5 of 19 for South Dakota State.
Both teams had 46 rebounds. Carlson's 12 and Sam Sussenguth's 10 led the Bison, and Dale Moss had eight for the Jacks.
A crowd of 3,575 was on hand at Frost Arena on a snowy night that kept North Dakota State from returning home after the game. NDSU stopped 50 miles north of town in Watertown, S.D.
North Dakota State is back on the road next week to play at IPFW on Thursday, Feb. 18, and first-place Oakland next Saturday, Feb. 20.
