Box Score ROCHESTER, Mich.--Derick Nelson had 21 points and 14 rebounds as Oakland clinched the Summit League men's basketball championship with an 88-81 victory over North Dakota State before a crowd of 3,101 at the Athletics Center O'Rena on Saturday, Feb. 20.
Johnathon Jones dished out seven assists and scored 21 of his 24 points in the second half for the Golden Grizzlies (22-8, 16-1), who shot 58 percent after halftime to win their 19th straight home Summit League game.
Michael Tveidt scored a game-high 28 points to lead four players in double figures for North Dakota State (10-16, 7-9). Eric Carlson had 14 points and eight rebounds, Nate Zastrow had 13 points and five assists, and Josh Vaughan added 11 points for the Bison.
North Dakota State went more than five minutes without a field goal to start the game as Oakland jumped out to a 12-4 lead. Tveidt's back-to-back baskets tied it at 26, and his basket at the 4:31 mark put the Bison ahead for the first time, 31-30.
NDSU got an important nine first-half minutes from redshirt freshman Andy Nagel, who followed Tveidt's go-ahead basket with a pair of layups to extend NDSU's lead to 35-30. Defensively, Nagel had three rebounds and helped limit Oakland center Keith Benson to three field goals before the break.
Nagel finished his best game as a Bison with five points and five rebounds. He played 12 minutes.
North Dakota State shot 52 percent from the field in the first half and outrebounded the Golden Grizzlies 11-3 over the last eight minutes of the period to take a 41-35 halftime lead.
Benson's first field goal of the second half put Oakland ahead 49-48 at the 13:10 mark, and OU went ahead for good with eight straight points from Jones including consecutive 3-pointers that made it 57-53 with 9:44 left.
Benson finished 7 of 14 from the floor and had 17 points, eight rebounds and four blocked shots for Oakland. The Golden Grizzlies had a 46-37 rebounding advantage.
North Dakota State is scheduled to close out the regular season at home against IUPUI on Thursday, Feb. 25, and Western Illinois on Saturday, Feb. 27.
