Box Score FARGO, N.D.--LaTreze Mushatt scored 10 straight points and Trey McKinney-Jones made two free throws with 30 seconds left to help UMKC hold off North Dakota State 58-56 in Summit League men's basketball Thursday, Feb. 4, before a crowd of 2,547 at the Bison Sports Arena.
Mushatt scored UMKC's only six field goals in the final 11 minutes, 25 seconds of the game and finished with 17 points for the Kangaroos (10-12, 4-7). Jay Cousinard had 18 points and 13 rebounds.
The game's biggest lead was five points and it was tied for the 10th time at 49-49 before the Bison went ahead 52-49 on a three-point play by Josh Vaughan.
That was North Dakota State's last field goal until the closing seconds. After a pair of Michael Tveidt free throws at the 4:35 mark gave the Bison a 54-51 lead, NDSU didn't score unitl Eric Carlson's layup with 6.4 left.
Mushatt scored a pair of baskets three minutes apart to put UMKC ahead 55-54 with 1:18 to play, and McKinney-Jones made both ends of a 1-and-1 at the foul line to put the Roos ahead by three.
Tveidt scored a game-high 20 points for the Bison (8-14, 5-7), and all seven other players in the game scored, including eight points from Carlson and seven off the bench from Drew Lundberg.
Vaughan grabbed a team-high nine rebounds and Tveidt had eight as NDSU outrebounded UMKC 36-33.
North Dakota State shot 40 percent from the field compared to 38 percent for the Kangaroos, who had a 34-29 lead at halftime.
NDSU hosts Southern Utah at 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 6. The Thunderbirds are 6-16 overall and 2-9 in The Summit League after an 84-60 loss at South Dakota State on Thursday.
