North Dakota State Walks Past Central Michigan, 7-3

CLERMONT, Fla.--North Dakota State got 4 1/3 scoreless innings from its bullpen and took advantage of five straight free bases in the sixth inning to defeat Central Michigan 7-3 in the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational on Saturday, March 13, at East Ridge High School.

Freshman reliever Kyle Kingsley (1-0) struck out two batters in 2 1/3 innings for the win, and sophomore closer Anthony Kliniske pitched two shutout innings with three strikeouts.

North Dakota State tied the game 2-2 in the fourth inning on a two-run homer by second baseman Wes Satzinger, but Central Michigan (4-5) went back ahead on center fielder Billy Anderson's solo shot in the fifth.

The Bison (3-5) went ahead for good by scoring four runs with two outs in the top of the sixth inning.

Pinch hitter Eric Nutzhorn was hit by a pitch to load the bases before left fielder Tyler Steen and shortstop Max Casper drew consecutive walks.  Pinch runner Kenny Beese scored on a wild pitch and catcher Justin Kline drew another bases-loaded walk to make it 6-3.

NDSU tacked on an unearned run in the eighth when left fielder Tim Jallen was hit by a pitch, moved to second on a wild pitch, and scored with two outs on an infield error.

Right fielder Zach Heidmann and center fielder Michael Riewer each had two hits for North Dakota State.

NDSU starter Mark Hermes gave up three runs on five hits with five walks and two strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings.  CMU starter Jess Hernandez (1-1) allowed six runs on seven hits with two walks and four strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings.

Anderson was 3-for-4 and scored three runs for the Chippewas, and first baseman Nate Theunissen was 2-for-4.

North Dakota State is scheduled to face Akron at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, March 14, at Chain of Lakes Stadium in Winter Haven, Fla.  The Zips are 6-6 overall after a 14-4 victory over Yale on Saturday.
