Box Score SHREVEPORT, La.--Centenary starter Boone Whiting struck out eight and Michael Tompkins hit a three-run homer to lead the Gents to a 7-5 victory over North Dakota State in Summit League baseball Friday, April 16, at Shehee Stadium.
Tyler Steen was 3-for-4 with a triple and two runs scored for North Dakota State, which dropped to 12-15 overall and 3-2 in The Summit League. Centenary improved to 14-14 overall and 4-1 in the league.
North Dakota State trailed 7-2 before getting two runs in the seventh on sacrifice flies by Tanner Adam and Zach Wentz to make it 7-4. Wentz was 0-for-2 with a pair of walks and had a 15-game hitting streak ended.
NDSU pulled within 7-5 in the eighth when Steen hit a leadoff single and scored on Tim Jallen's sac fly. The Bison got two walks in the ninth to put the tying run on base, but a groundout ended the game.
Centenary scored four runs with two outs in the bottom of the third to break the game open. Tell Ross doubled in Scott Pasket, and Jeff Ericson drew a base on balls to set up Tompkins' second homer of the season.
Tompkins, Ross, Cliff Shepard and Keegan Acker all had two hits for the Gents. Whiting allowed four runs on seven hits with two walks in seven innings to improve to 3-1, and Stephen Tromblee pitched the final two innings for his third save of the year.
Kenny Beese was 2-for-4 with an RBI triple in the fourth and a double and run scored in the seventh. Justin Kline added a pair of hits for the Bison.
NDSU starting pitcher Kyle Kingsley allowed five runs on six hits with two walks and two strikeouts in three innings to drop to 3-2 on the season. Alex Chaput pitched the final five innings of relief.
North Dakota State and Centenary are scheduled to continue their four-game series with a 1 p.m. doubleheader Saturday, April 17.
