Centenary Sweeps Doubleheader From North Dakota State, 4-2 and 5-0

SHREVEPORT, La.--Alex Todd hit a two-run homer and Justin Kraft struck out five as Centenary completed a doubleheader sweep with a 5-0 victory over North Dakota State in Summit League baseball Saturday, April 17, at Shehee Stadium.

Todd was 5-for-7 in the doubleheader including three hits in the first game as the Gents (16-14, 6-1) got four scoreless innings from their bullpen for a 4-2 victory.

Centenary took a 3-0 lead in the opener on Cliff Shepard's two-run double in the third and Jeff Schaffert's RBI groundout in the fourth.

The Bison (12-17, 3-4) pulled within a run in the sixth when Max Casper hit a bases-loaded single to score Zach Heidmann, and Justin Kline hit a sacrifice fly to score Jay Hartman and make it 3-2.

Centenary's Keegan Acker delievered an RBI single in the seventh to cap the scoring.

Zach Wentz went 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles in the first game to lead the Bison, and Tyler Steen was 2-for-5 at the plate.

McHale Maristuen pitched 5 1/3 innings in the opener for NDSU.  Maristuen allowed three runs on eight hits with one walk and five strikeouts and dropped to 1-5 with the loss.  Jason Mattila had two strikeouts in 2 2/3 innings of relief.

In the nightcap, Centenary got all the runs it needed in the first when Scott Pasket walked and scored on Shepard's single, and Todd hit his fourth homer of the year to make it 3-0.

The Gents went ahead 5-0 in the fifth.  Pasket was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and scored on Shepard's double on the next play.  Shepard scored moved up to third on Michael Tompkins' fly ball on the ensuing play and came in on an error by the NDSU center fielder.

North Dakota State had runners on base in six of seven innings but couldn't score against Kraft, who scattered six hits, walked two and fanned five for the shutout.  Kraft evened his record at 3-3.

Tanner Adam and Tim Jallen were both 2-for-3 for NDSU in the second game.  Shepard, Todd and Jeff Ericson all went 2-for-3 for the Gents.

NDSU starter Mark Hermes was responsible for all five runs on six hits with three walks and two strikeouts in four innings of work, and he dropped to 1-1 with the loss.  Luke Anderson pitched two scoreless innings of relief despite issuing three walks.

NDSU had runners on first and third with two outs in the top of the seventh inning when the second game was called due to rain.  By Summit League policy, it was a regulation game and will not be resumed.

North Dakota State and Centenary are scheduled to play the final game of their four-game series at 11:35 a.m. Sunday, April 18.
