Box Score FARGO, N.D.--Anthony Kliniske struck out five of the seven batters he faced for his third save of the season and North Dakota State defeated Mayville State 7-5 in college baseball Tuesday, April 20, at Newman Outdoor Field.
Kliniske entered a 6-5 game to get the final two outs of the eighth inning with the go-ahead run at first base, and he survived a walk and hit-by-pitch in the ninth to strand two more runners as North Dakota State improved to 13-18 overall.
NDSU trailed 3-1 before scoring four runs in the sixth inning. Michael Riewer drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on a balk and scored on Jay Hartman's double into the right-field corner to start the scoring.
Max Casper blooped a game-tying single over third base and later scored on an error, and Zach Wentz hit an RBI single to put the Bison ahead 5-3.
Mayville State (19-15) tied the game in the top of the seventh. Dusty Brend led off with a walk, moved to second on a wild pitch, and scored on Alex Berry's single through the right side. Berry advanced to third base on a wild throw to the plate and scored on Jake McLain's sacrifice fly to make it 5-5.
NDSU went ahead for good in the seventh when Tyler Steen hit a leadoff single, moved to second on Riewer's sacrifice bunt and scored on Kenny Beese's single to left field off reliever Zach Schaefer.
That made a winner of NDSU reliever Jason Mattila, who was responsible for both Mayville State runs in the seventh but improved to 3-1 on the year.
Matthew Mueller, the second of four Mayville State pitchers, dropped to 1-2 with the loss. Mueller allowed four runs, two earned, on four hits with one walk and no strikeouts in 1 1/3 innings.
Hartman and Casper both hit 3-for-4 for NDSU, while Steen and Wentz each finished 2-for-4. The Bison hit into three double plays and stranded 12 runners on base.
Dan Silva was 3-for-3 with two RBIs and Spencer Braun was 3-for-3 with two doubles to lead the Comets.
North Dakota State is scheduled to begin a four-game Summit League series at IPFW on Friday, April 23. The Mastodons are 7-27 overall after losing 14-4 at Valparaiso on Tuesday afternoon.
