
North Dakota State Sweeps North Dakota in Tournament Opener

FARGO, N.D. -Brynn Joki had career-high 18 kills and 10 digs to lead North Dakota State to a 26-24, 25-21, 25-19 victory over North Dakota in the opening match of the Doublewood Inn Classic women's volleyball tournament Thursday, Sept. 16.
A standing-room-only crowd of 1,638 was at the Bentson Bunker Fieldhouse to see the two former North Central Confernce rivals meet for the first time since the 2003 NCAA regional. It was the fourth largest home crowd in NDSU history.
It wasn't an easy sweep for NDSU (5-4). The Bison trailed the entire first set until Joki's back-to-back kills forced a 24-24 tie. Chrissy Knuth got her only two blocks of the night on the next two points for the win.
Joki had seven kills and was errorless in 10 attacks in the first set. She finished the night hitting .361.
NDSU trailed 7-1 in the second set before rallying back. Joki had back-to-back kills to get the Bison within 8-7 and tied it at 10 with her first of of two service aces.
The Bison got out to a 10-6 lead in the third set then pulled away midway through. Megan Lambertson had a kill and a block and Nicole Sheridan two kills and a block to spark a 7-0 run that made it 19-12.
Brooke VandenBergh added 11 kills and 11 digs for NDSU, Lambertson hit .700 with eight kills in 10 attacks, and setter Jennifer Lopez hit .455 with seven kills to go with her match-high 40 assists.
Annika Smed and Devin Trefz had nine kills apiece for North Dakota (8-4). Erin Joki, the older sister of Brynn, hit .368 with seven kills for UND.
The Bison had a 45-33 advantage in digs and outhit UND by a .311 to .206 margin.
NDSU has won five straight against UND and the Bison lead the all-time series 77-11.
North Dakota State is scheduled to play Tulsa (6-2) in the fourth match of the Doublewood Inn Classic at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 17.
Tulsa will play South Dakota (2-11) in the 1 p.m. match and North Dakota will play South Dakota State (4-4) in the 4 p.m. match.
