Box Score FARGO, N.D. - The North Dakota State soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to Northern Iowa on a first half penalty kick on Sunday, Sept. 19 at the Ellig Sports Complex. The Bison fall to 4-2-2 this season, while Northern Iowa improves to 1-6-1.
The Bison dominated the shot count, 23-3, and notched 11 shots on goal, but could not find the finishing touch to put one in the back of the net. UNI goalie Lauren Potzman made 11 saves.
Junior Abbey Stratton hit the post with a shot in the eighth minute as the Bison applied early pressure.
In the 20th minute, Northern Iowa was awarded a penalty kick after a foul in the box. Chelsie Hochstedler converted the spot kick for her third goal of the season.
Stratton hit the crossbar with a shot in the 30th minute as NDSU searched for an equalizer.
In the second half, senior Candice D'Arcangeli's early headed effort hit the post in the 51st minute. The Bison continued to push forward looking for a tying goal. In the final minutes, freshman Stephanie Jacobson forced a save and sophomore Brooklyn Dyce sent a shot just over the crossbar. Dyce led the team with five shots on the day.
In the 88th minute, junior Michelle Gaffaney's shot richoceted off the post and along the goal line, but the Panthers were able to clear the ball as it proved to be NDSU's final chance.
Junior goalie Kalani Bertsch made two saves in the loss and moves to 1-1-2 this season as the starter.
The Bison now travel to Des Moines, Iowa to play Drake Thursday, Sept. 23 at 7 p.m.
