Box Score FARGO, N.D. – Michael Tveidt scored on an alley-oop from Eric Carlson with 1.7 seconds remaining in the second overtime period to lift North Dakota State to an 89-88 victory over UMKC (13-9, 6-5 overall) in men's basketball on Saturday, Jan. 29 in front of 3,377 fans at the Bison Sports Arena.
Carlson led the Bison (11-10, 5-6 Summit) with a career-high 32 points. He also tied a career-high with 12 rebounds for his second double-double of the season. Carlson is the first NDSU player to crack the 30-point mark since Ben Woodside scored 37 points against Kansas in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on March 20, 2009. Tveidt added 23 points with nine coming in the overtime periods.
Jay Couisnard led the Kangaroos with 28 points and 13 rebounds. Trinity Hall and Bakari Lewis added 14 points apiece.
The Bison led by as many as 10 points in the first half, but UMKC pulled within two before a pair of free throws from Carlson made the score 38-34 going into the break.
UMKC tied the game at 39-39 on a jumper from Cousinard for the first of 11 ties in the second half. Tveidt gave the Bison a 75-73 lead with 1:16 remaining in the game, but two free throws from UMKC's Hall with 48 seconds left was enough to send the game to overtime.
Tveidt gave the Bison a two-point lead in the first overtime period after making a pair of foul shots, but UMKC responded with a three-pointer from Reggie Chamberlain with 1:44 remaining. Dustin Dibble gave the Kangaroos a two-point cushion after going 1 for 2 from the charity stripe. Drew Lundberg hit a pair of free throws with 1:01 left to tie the game at 79-79.
Tveidt took over in the second overtime, scoring seven of NDSU's 10 points in the period. A free throw from Tveidt tied the game at 85-85 with nine seconds left in the period, but UMKC's Lewis was fouled shooting a three pointer with three seconds left. Lewis converted all three shots to give the Kangaroos an 88-87 lead. After an NDSU timeout, Carlson lobbed the ball up to a cutting Tveidt for the game-winning layup.
UMKC was plagued by its free throw shooting, going 19-34 for 55.9 percent. The Bison went 26 of 34 from the charity stripe for 76.5 percent. NDSU finished the game shooting 48.3 percent (29 of 60) and UMKC shot 44.1 percent (30 of 68).
