Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

BEAUMONT, Texas - Pablo Salinas hit a leadoff double in the 11th inning and scored on Ted Zentek's one-out single to give Lamar a 4-3 win over North Dakota State in the first game of a college baseball doubleheader Saturday, Feb. 26, at Vincent-Beck Stadium.

The Cardinals (5-3) made a second-inning RBI double from Cameron Campbell and RBI groundout from Andrew Dewey hold up to win the second game 2-1.

In the opener, North Dakota State (0-6) took advantage of two Lamar errors to jump out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning.  The Bison went ahead 3-0 in the fourth when Zach Wentz drew a leadoff walk and scored with help from two wild pitches and an infield ground ball.

Lamar got two runs back when Zentek and Aaron Buchanan started the sixth inning with back-to-back singles and later scored, and the Cardinals tied it in the eighth when Kevin Roebuck drew a leadoff walk and came around on singles by Wade Mathis and Jude Vidrine.

NDSU had one run taken away in the top of the eighth when Wes Satzinger was thrown out at the plate trying to score on a popup into right field, and the Bison went down in order in the ninth and 10th before stranding a pair of runners in the 11th.

NDSU sophomore Simon Anderson had four strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings in his first collegiate start, but did not factor in the decision.  Jason Mattila was responsible for the last two runs and dropped to 0-1 with the loss.  Mattila allowed six hits and had three walks and three strikeouts.

Vidrine was 2-for-4 for Lamar in the opener and Zentek finished 2-for-3.  Zach Boulanger and Andrew Beasley combined to pitch six scoreless innings with Beasley getting the win to improve to 1-0.

Sophomore Mark Hermes pitched all eight innings in the second game for NDSU and dropped to 0-2 with the loss.  Hermes allowed two runs on five hits and four walks with three strikeouts.  He allowed only one runner past first base after the second inning.

NDSU left nine runners on base in the nightcap, including five in scoring position.  The Bison got their only run in the seventh when Kirk Kenneally reached on a throwing error, moved to third on Max Casper's sac bunt and scored on Nick Colwell's ground ball to first base.

The Bison bench threatened in the ninth when Zach Heidmann drew a pinch-hit base on balls and pinch runner Blake Turbak moved to third on Kyle Kleinendorst's pinch-hit single to right field on a full count.  A ground ball ended the game.

Machon Trimm, the second of three Lamar pitchers, upped his record to 1-0 with the win after holding the Bison scoreless on three hits over four innings of work.  Shane Hamaker got his first save of the year with one unearned run in the final four innings.

Wentz was 2-for-4 in the second game with his third double of the season, and Tyler Steen went 1-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to four games.

The final game of the series is scheduled for 10 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 27.
