Box Score AUBURNDALE, Fla. - North Dakota State scored four runs in the eighth inning and Jason Mattila retired four straight batters for the save as the Bison beat Bucknell 5-3 for their first win of the season Tuesday, March 15, in the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational at Lake Myrtle Park.
Blake Turbak delivered a two-run single to break a 1-1 tie and North Dakota State (1-13) extended the lead to 5-1 when Wes Satzinger scored on a wild pitch and Turbak scored on an infield groundout by Max Casper.
Bucknell (6-8) got two runs back in the bottom of the eighth on RBI singles by Gerry Runyan and Justin Meier, but Mattila came on to finish the eighth and then retire the 1-2-3 hitters in order in the ninth for his second career save.
Turbak finished 2-for-4 and Satzinger was 2-for-4 with a triple and a bunt single for NDSU. Zach Wentz singled in the first inning to extend his hitting streak to 11 games.
NDSU starter Luke Anderson struck out seven and walked four in five innings for a no-decision. Kyle Kingsley got the win with 2 2/3 innings of relief. Kingsley allowed two runs on four hits with no walks and one strikeout to improve to 1-3.
Meier was 2-for-4 to lead the Bucknell attack. Matt Lamore, the second of five Bucknell pitchers, allowed three runs on one hit with no walks and three strikeouts in 1 2/3 innings and dropped to 0-1 with the loss.
North Dakota State is scheduled to play Akron at 11 a.m. ET on Wednesday, March 16, at Henley Field in Lakeland, Fla. The Zips are 2-11 on the year after losing to Butler 4-3 on Monday.
