Box Score WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - Rob Elliott drew a two-out walk in ninth inning and scored two batters later to give Bradley a 6-5 win over North Dakota State in college baseball Thursday, March 17, in the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational at Chain of Lakes Stadium.
It was the sixth one-run loss of the year for North Dakota State, which dropped to 1-15 on the year. Bradley won for the sixth time in eight games to improve to 10-6.
North Dakota State tied the game at 5-5 in the top of the ninth when pinch-hitter Zach Heidmann led off with a double and scored one out later on Nick Colwell's single to right-center field.
NDSU reliever Jason Mattila got the first two outs on three pitches in the bottom of the ninth before issuing a four-pitch walk to Elliott, who stole second base. After an intentional walk, designated hitter Brad Kimball singled on the first pitch to plate the winning run.
Mike Tauchman was 3-for-4 with two stolen bases for the Braves, and reliever Justin Ziegler evened his record at 1-1 after the blown save opportunity in the ninth.
Tim Colwell and Zach Wentz were both 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored for the Bison, and teammates Wes Satzinger and Max Casper both finished 2-for-3 with a run scored. Wentz extended his hitting streak to 13 games and Tim Colwell has hit in nine straight.
NDSU starter Simon Anderson had a career-high seven strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings and allowed five runs, three earned, on eight hits with three walks. Kyle Kingsley pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings of relief and Mattila dropped to 0-2 with the loss.
North Dakota State committed a season-high five errors, including four in Bradley's three-run fifth inning that included a pair of unearned runs and gave the Braves a 5-3 lead.
The Bison got back within one in the top of the sixth when Wentz hit a leadoff single, moved to third on Satzinger's one-out single, and scored on Nick Anderson's sac fly.
NDSU opened the scoring in the second when Satzinger hit a one-out infield single, moved to third on a fielding error, and scored on Tanner Adam's first-pitch squeeze bunt.
Bradley went ahead in the bottom of the second with RBI singles from Austin Jarvis and Brian Martin, but the Bison answered in the third with back-to-back RBI singles from Tim Colwell and Wentz.
North Dakota State is scheduled to close out play in the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational with its seventh game in eight days against Butler at 5 p.m. ET on Friday, March 18, at Lake Myrtle Park in Auburndale, Fla.
