Bison Sweep Doubleheader From Southern Utah 13-5, 8-7

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

HENDERSON, Nev. - North Dakota State scored 10 unearned runs in the eighth inning to beat Southern Utah 13-5 in the first game of a Summit League baseball doubleheader Saturday, April 9, at Basic High School.  The Bison won the second game 8-7 in eight innings.

North Dakota State snapped a three-game losing streak and upped its record to 4-18 overall and 2-2 in The Summit League.  Southern Utah fell to 13-16 overall and 2-2 in the league.

Leadoff hitter Zach Wentz and cleanup hitter Nick Colwell both went 3-for-5 in the opener, and No. 9 hitter Wes Satzinger drove in three runs to lead the Bison.  Wentz hit his third home run of the year.

NDSU sent 14 batters to the plate in the 10-run eighth.  Tyler Steen's two-run double put NDSU ahead for good, and the Bison capped the rally with a rare three-run single when Max Casper sped home from first base on Satzinger's hit to the outfield.

Kyle Kingsley, the third of four NDSU pitchers, got the win in the first game with 1 1/3 scoreless innings.  John Straka pitched a perfect ninth in his first live action after missing the entire 2010 season with an arm injury.

North Dakota State jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the second game with a five-run sixth inning, and all five of those runs were unearned thanks to three Southern Utah errors.  Casper had an RBI bunt single, Wentz singled in two runs, and Steen lifted a sacrifice fly during the inning.

Southern Utah was down to its final out before rallying for five runs in the bottom of the seventh.  Taylor Shaw hit a two-run single to make it 7-6 and Brock Westphal scored on a wild pitch to tie the game.  The Thunderbirds stranded the winning run at second on an infield groundout.

NDSU got the go-ahead run in the eighth when Satzinger hit a leadoff double and scored four batters later on Colwell's sacrifice fly to left field.

The Bison left the bases loaded in the eighth, but reliever Jason Mattila was able to pitch around a leadoff single in the bottom of the inning and upped his record to 1-2 with the win.

Satzinger and Zach Heidmann each had two hits in the second game for NDSU.

The games were originally scheduled to be played at the Southern Utah campus in Cedar City but were moved to the Las Vegas area due to rain and snow.

North Dakota State is scheduled to host Mayville State at 5 p.m. Tuesday, April 12, before traveling to Oakland for a four-game Summit League series beginning Friday, April 15.
