Neuhart Doubles Thunderbirds Past Bison, 2-1

Box Score

HENDERSON, Nev. - Justin Neuhart's two-run double in the sixth inning lifted Southern Utah to a 2-1 win over North Dakota State in Summit League baseball Friday, April 8, at Basic High School.

North Dakota State left a runner in scoring position in the seventh and eighth innings before going down in order in the ninth.  It was the third straight one-run loss and ninth of the year for the Bison (2-18, 0-2).

Neuhart's double was one of only three hits in the game for the Thunderbirds (13-14, 2-0) against NDSU sophomore Mark Hermes, who went seven innings with a career-high nine strikeouts but dropped to 1-5 on the year.

Designated hitter Blake Turbak was 3-for-4 to lead NDSU and teammates Zach Wentz and Max Casper had the team's only two other hits.  Turbak hit a leadoff single in the third and scored on a wild pitch for NDSU's only run.

Southern Utah lefty James Crockett also struck out nine in a complete-game effort and improved to 2-5 on the year.

The game was originally scheduled to be played as part of a doubleheader at the Southern Utah campus in Cedar City, then was moved to nearby St. George and eventually to the Las Vegas area due to rain and snow.

The teams are scheduled to wrap up the four-game series with a doubleheader at 12 p.m. PT on Saturday, April 9, at Basic High School.  It will be a nine-inning game followed by a seven-inning game.
