Box Score

FARGO, N.D. - South Dakota State scored 14 runs in the first four innings and held on for a 15-12 non-conference win over North Dakota State in college baseball Tuesday, May 10, at Newman Outdoor Field.

North Dakota State trailed 15-7 entering the bottom of the ninth and scored five runs with two outs before Zach Wentz lined out to second base to end the game with the tying run on deck.

NDSU lost for the fourth time in five games and dropped to 17-25 overall.  SDSU won for the 28th time in 32 games and improved to 31-13 overall.

The Bison took a 5-1 lead in the first inning with four straight two-out singles to chase SDSU starter Shane Kraemer.  Winning pitcher Marcus Heemstra pitched the next 5 1/3 innings and allowed only one Bison runner past first base until the sixth.

SDSU pulled back within 5-4 in the second when Aaron Machbitz hit an RBI single and Joel Blake drove in two more with a two-out single.  The Jackrabbits sent 12 men to the plate and went ahead for good with a seven-run third inning highlighted by Andrew Phelan's bases-loaded triple.

The Bison were still in the game thanks to the pitching of left-handed reliever Glenn Parker, who tossed three hitless innings with a season-high three strikeouts in his longest outing of the year.

NDSU scored twice in the sixth when Nick Anderson drew a two-out walk and scored on Wentz's 16th double of the season, and Tanner Adam singled in Wentz to make it 14-7.

The ninth-inning rally started when pinch hitters Nick Altavilla and Jay Hartman reached on a walk and hit-by-pitch, respectively.  Second baseman Kirk Kenneally hit a two-run single to make it 15-9, pinch hitter Ben Herauf roped a two-run double into the right-field corner, and Anderson doubled in Herauf to pull within 15-12.

Wentz finished 3-for-6 and scored twice for NDSU, and Kenneally was 2-for-5 with two runs and three RBIs.  Bryant Larson, the second of five NDSU pitchers, allowed six runs on two hits with three walks in one-third of an inning and dropped to 0-1 with the loss.

SDSU's Zach Rhodes was 3-for-4 with a two-run homer and four RBIs, Joel Blake was 3-for-5 with four RBIs, and Daniel Marra finished 3-for-6 with two RBIs.  Heemstra allowed two runs on four hits, walked two and fanned three to up his record to 3-0.

Third-place North Dakota State is scheduled to host fifth-place IPFW at 6:30 p.m. Friday, May 13, in the first of a four-game Summit League series at Newman Outdoor Field.  The Mastodons are 13-30 after a 3-1 home loss to Butler on Tuesday.
