Box Score FARGO, N.D. - Nick Opitz pitched a complete-game six-hitter to lead IPFW to a 3-0 win over North Dakota State in the first of a four-game Summit League baseball series Friday, May 13, at Newman Outdoor Field.
Opitz (4-7) struck out six with no walks and Will Faulkner went 4-for-4 for the Mastodons, who upped their record to 14-30 overall and 9-12 in The Summit League.
Tim Colwell had two hits and Colby Tognetti (3-5) allowed two runs on nine hits with eight strikeouts and two walks in seven innings for the Bison, who dropped to 17-26 overall and 11-9 in the league.
IPFW loaded the bases with nobody out in the first inning but could not score until the second when Kristian Gayday tripled to right-center field and scored on a wild pitch.
Garrett Segraves drew a two-out walk and scored two batters later on Brett Clark's single through the right side to make it 2-0, and the Dons tacked on another run in the eighth when Cody Galbraith led off with a single and scored on Cory Miller's two-out hit.
Opitz allowed only two runners past first base. NDSU stranded Nick Colwell at third base in the second after an error and groundout, and the Bison left Nic Obey on after a one-out triple in the fifth.
Segraves and Miller both hit 2-for-4 for the Mastodons, who had 12 hits in the game.
North Dakota State and IPFW are scheduled to play a 1 p.m. doubleheader Saturday, May 14, and the series finale is scheduled for 1 p.m. Sunday, May 15.
