Box Score 2 FARGO, N.D. - Brett Clark hit a two-run single to give IPFW a 5-4 win in the first game and then hit a two-run homer in the nightcap as the Mastodons won 5-1 to sweep a Summit League baseball doubleheader from North Dakota State on Sunday, May 15, at Newman Outdoor Field.
IPFW took 3 out of 4 in the series and stayed in the Summit League playoff hunt at 16-31 overall and tied for fifth with a 11-13 league record. North Dakota State fell to 18-28 overall but remains third in the league at 12-11.
The Mastodons trailed 4-3 entering the ninth inning of the opener but capitalized on a throwing error by closer Jason Mattila to start the inning.
After a sac bunt moved Nate Thomas to third with the tying run, Garrett Segraves walked and stole second, Will Faulkner was intentionally walked, and Clark bounced his first pitch past a diving Zach Heidmann at first base to put the Mastodons ahead 5-4.
Matt Ransbottom retired the Bison in order in the bottom of the ninth and upped his record to 4-2 with the win despite allowing two runs on four hits in 3 1/3 innings of relief.
NDSU got a two-run single from Wes Satzinger to go ahead 2-1 in the second inning, but IPFW went back up 3-2 in the sixth when Kurt Dudley homered down the right-field line. The Bison went ahead 4-3 in the seventh when Blake Turbak and Zach Wentz both singled with one out and Heidmann followed with a two-run single.
Bison starter Luke Anderson allowed three runs on six hits with two walks and five strikeouts in seven innings. Kyle Kingsley pitched a scoreless eighth, and Mattila's record evened at 3-3 with the loss.
Wentz finished 3-for-5 in the opener and Turbak, Heidmann and Nick Anderson had two hits apiece. Dudley, Zach Hufferd and Carter DeBoe each had two hits for IPFW.
IPFW jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning of the nightcap thanks to a wild outing by NDSU starter Mark Hermes, who walked four and hit two of the eight batters he faced in one-plus inning.
Two walks and a hit-by-pitch to start the second loaded the bases for Kristian Gayday, who drew a base on balls to make it 1-0. Reliever Glenn Parker got a popup for the first out before Segraves doubled in two runs. Another walk filled the bases before Parker got a strikeout and line drive to end the inning.
NDSU got its only run in the bottom of the second when Max Casper hit a two-out single, moved to second on Satzinger's infield error, and scored on Tim Colwell's single to left field.
IPFW tacked on two more in the sixth when Faulkner hit a two-out double and Clark homered to right field. It was Clark's first homer of the year.
Colwell was 3-for-4 for NDSU and Hermes dropped to 2-7 with the loss. Samuel Walker pitched a complete game for IPFW with six hits, two walks and six strikeouts and improved to 5-4.
