Box Score FARGO, N.D. - Wes Satzinger drove in two runs and Zach Wentz hit a three-run homer to lead North Dakota State to a 5-0 win over IPFW in Summit League baseball Saturday, May 14, at Newman Outdoor Field.
Winning pitcher John Straka (2-2) allowed four hits and struck out three over six innings for North Dakota State, which improved to 18-26 overall and 12-9 in the league.
IPFW's Will Faulkner and Kristian Gayday each had two hits and Lucas Kesterson (0-7) pitched all eight innings for the Mastodons, who dropped to 14-31 overall and 9-13 in the league.
NDSU got the only runs it needed in the second inning when Nic Obey hit a one-out double and Nick Colwell walked. A groundout moved both runners up before Satzinger roped an 0-2 pitch into left field for a two-run lead.
The Bison capitalized on two IPFW errors in the third. Tyler Steen reached on a dropped throw at first base, Blake Turbak's sacrifice bunt was misplayed by Kesterson, and Wentz smashed a 2-2 pitch into the wind in left for a 5-0 lead.
Straka followed that up with 1-2-3 innings in the fourth and fifth and gave up one hit in the sixth before leaving. Glenn Parker came on to strike out three of the six batters he faced, Kyle Kingsley got the final two outs of the eighth, and Jason Mattila pitched a scoreless ninth in a non-save situation.
Obey finished 3-for-4 with a single, double and triple. Satzinger was 2-for-3.
The four-game series is scheduled to conclude with a 1 p.m. doubleheader Sunday, May 15.
