SDSU started its first inning with back-to-back singles and went ahead 1-0 on a ground-ball double play. Zach Rhodes followed with a walk and Cain homered into the wind in right field to extend the lead to 3-0 in the first.
The Jackrabbits stranded three runners in scoring position the next two innings before getting a one-out double from Zach Briggs, who moved to third on Beau Hanowski's single and scored on a fielder's choice by Billy Stitz.
Stitz's ground ball started a string of 14 straight batters retired by NDSU starter Colby Tognetti to end the game. Tognetti, who also had a 4-3 complete-game loss at SDSU on May 6, allowed nine hits, walked two and struck out three to drop to 4-6 on the year.
The Bison got on the board in the seventh when Zach Wentz hit a leadoff single, moved to second on a bunt by Zach Heidmann, went to third on back-to-back walks to Nic Obey and Nick Colwell, and scored on Max Casper's sacrifice fly down the right-field line.
NDSU threatened again in the eighth with a pair of singles from Tim Colwell and Blake Turbak, but SDSU closer Trever Vermeulen came on to get Wentz looking on an inside curveball and got Heidmann to ground out to end the inning.
Vermeulen got a 1-2-3 ninth for his 10th save of the year. Treinen walked two, struck out five, and improved to 7-3 with the victory.
Turbak and Tim Colwell were both 2-for-4 for the Bison. Hanowski, Stitz and Cain each finished with two hits for the Jackrabbits.
