Obey Doubles Bison Past Western Illinois in Summit League Tournament, 5-3

Box Score

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - Nic Obey hit a two-run double and the North Dakota State bullpen pitched three shutout innings to give the No. 3-seeded Bison a 5-3 win over No. 4 seed Western Illinois in the Summit League baseball tournament Friday, May 27, at Sioux Falls Stadium.

North Dakota State improved to 22-31 and advanced to Saturday's 3:30 p.m. elimination game against the loser of Saturday's 12 p.m. semifinal between No. 1 seed Oral Roberts and No. 2 seed South Dakota State.  Western Illinois ended its season 21-38 overall.

Obey, who was 0-for-6 with three strikeouts to start the tournament, roped a 3-2 pitch to right-center field to score Zach Wentz from second and Zach Heidmann from first after a one-out single and walk.

That made a winner of NDSU reliever Kyle Kingsley (4-3), who walked one and struck out one in two innings of relief.  Jason Mattila hit a batter and allowed two singles in the ninth, but got Bryan Jordan to fly out with the bases loaded for his seventh save of the year.

Wentz put NDSU ahead 1-0 in the third with an RBI single to score Blake Turbak after a two-out single, wild pitch and throwing error.  Turbak, from 100 miles away in Watertown, S.D., went 3-for-5 in the game and is 5-for-9 in the tournament.

Western Illinois went ahead 2-1 in the bottom of the third when Tom Lilja led off with a single and Anthony Kaskadden and Matt Igara hit consecutive one-out RBI singles.  Lilja's sacrifice fly in the sixth gave the Leathernecks a 3-1 lead.

The Bison pulled within 3-2 when Nick Colwell and Max Casper started the seventh with back-to-back singles, moved up on Wes Satzinger's sac bunt, and Tim Colwell lifted a sac fly to score his older brother.

Obey's go-ahead double was NDSU's only extra-base hit in two tournament games.  The Bison had six singles in Thursday's loss to South Dakota State and finished with 12 total hits in Friday's win.

The Bison added an insurance run in the ninth when Tim Colwell hit a one-out single, stole second with two outs, and scored on Turbak's third hit of the game.

NDSU starter John Straka threw 93 pitches in six innings of work allowing three runs on five hits with three walks and no strikeouts.  He retired six straight batters to start the game, extending a streak of 20 straight batters retired by NDSU pitching after Colby Tognetti got the last 14 outs Thursday night.

Western Illinois starter Ryan Wachholder allowed four runs, three earned, on nine hits with two walks and five strikeouts in 7 1/3 innings and dropped to 3-8 with the loss.  Igara and Lilja had two hits each for the Leathernecks.

The start of the game - originally slated for 11 a.m. - was delayed five hours due to rain.  The ORU-SDSU semifinal game was moved back to 7 p.m. and then postponed until Saturday after a 90-minute rain delay.
