Box Score SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - Andrew Phelan went 4-for-4 with a homer and four RBIs and All-America closer Trever Vermeulen got the final three outs as No. 2 seed South Dakota State held off No. 3 seed North Dakota State 13-10 in the Summit League baseball tournament Saturday, May 28, at Sioux Falls Stadium.
North Dakota State got 12 of its 16 hits in the final three innings and scored nine unanswered runs in the eighth and ninth but left the tying run on deck. The Bison finished 22-32, matching their best win total as a Division I program set last year.
South Dakota State improved to 37-19 and advanced to its third straight championship game Sunday at 11 a.m. against top seed and 13-time defending champ Oral Roberts (35-20), which beat SDSU 7-1 in Saturday's semifinal.
NDSU went ahead 1-0 in the first on an RBI double by Blake Turbak, who was 6-for-11 in the tournament, but SDSU had its leadoff man on in each of the first six innings and scored at least two runs in six straight innings from the third through the eighth.
The Jackrabbits went ahead for good on Phelan's two-out RBI double in the third. He added a two-run homer in the fifth and an RBI single in the sixth.
Beau Hanowski's two-run shot in the seventh was his first career home run and made it 10-run game. Erik DeJong's pinch-hit two-run double in the eighth gave the Jacks a 13-1 lead.
NDSU closed the gap with five runs in the eighth starting the rally with consecutive singles by reserves Tanner Adam, Kirk Kenneally and Jay Hartman to load the bases.
First baseman Zach Heidmann lifted a sacrifice fly and right fielder Nic Obey hit an RBI single, and Wes Satzinger hit a three-run double to left to make it 13-6.
The Bison got four more in the ninth against SDSU reliever Shane Kraemer, who gave up four straight hits to Adam, Kenneally, Hartman and Heidmann before leaving.
Vermeulen came on to get two ground ball outs before Max Casper beat out a high chopper to second base to score Heidmann from third and make it 13-10. Satzinger struck out looking with Preston Ghizoni representing the tying run on deck.
Casper was 4-for-5 to lead the Bison attack and Satzinger was 2-for-5 with two doubles. Adam, Kenneally and Hartman were all 2-for-2 with two runs scored off the bench.
NDSU starter Luke Anderson allowed eight runs, seven earned, on nine hits with four walks and three strikeouts over five-plus innings and dropped to 2-3 with the loss.
SDSU starter Stephen Bougher went 7 1/3 innings and improved to 6-4 with the win. Bougher allowed five runs on nine hits with four walks and one strikeout.
South Dakota State won 6 of 7 meetings in the season series with North Dakota State.
