Box Score 2 BROOKINGS, S.D. - Joel Blake was 5-for-6 with five RBIs and Jesse Sawyer homered in both games to lead South Dakota State to an 8-5, 12-1 doubleheader sweep of North Dakota State in Summit League baseball Saturday, May 7, at Erv Huether Field.
South Dakota State has won 27 of its last 30 games and improved to 30-12 overall and 16-3 in the league. North Dakota State fell to 16-24 overall and 10-8 in the league.
The first game was tied 5-5 after three innings and SDSU scored the winning run in the fifth inning when Zach Briggs hit a leadoff single and scored three plays later on Billy Stitz's single to center field.
Meanwhile, NDSU left the bases loaded in the fifth and sixth and Nick Colwell's eighth-inning single was NDSU's only hit after the third inning.
SDSU tacked on the final two runs in the eighth with three straight hits. Beau Hanowski led off with a single, Stitz scored him with a triple, and Blake followed with an RBI single to make it 8-5.
Colwell was 3-for-4 in the opener, Tyler Steen was 2-for-4 with a double, and Nic Obey was on base four times with a single and three hit-by-pitches.
John Straka, the second of three Bison pitchers, allowed three runs on seven hits with one walk and four strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings and dropped to 1-2 with the loss.
Winning pitcher Blake Treinen (5-2) allowed five runs, three earned, on seven hits with two walks and five strikeouts for the win, and Trever Vermuelen got his eighth save with two shutout innings.
SDSU led the second game 12-0 after five innings and Jacks starter Alex Oberle faced only two batters over the minimum before NDSU got on the board in the sixth. Wes Satzinger hit a leadoff double and Blake Turbak scored him with a two-out single.
Satzinger had two of NDSU's five hits, and Tim Colwell and Jay Hartman each singled for the Bison.
NDSU starter Zach Wentz allowed six runs on nine hits over 1 2/3 innings and dropped to 2-6 with the loss. Oberle evened his record at 4-4 with the win.
The fourth game of the series is scheduled for 1 p.m. Sunday, May 8.
