Bison Comeback Bid Falls Short in 3-2 Loss to Idaho

Box Score

MISSOULA, Mont. - Chelsea Small scored twice to lead Idaho to a 3-2 win over the North Dakota State soccer team on Sunday, Sept. 11 at the Nike Montana Cup.  The Bison fall to 4-2 overall and Idaho improves to 3-3-2.

Sophomore Katie Tallas and senior Megan Dean notched shots on goal for NDSU in the opening half hour, but Idaho struck first, scoring twice in one minute.  Katie Berens redirected a cross into the back of the net at the 31:32 mark and then Small scored 34 seconds later on a shot from 12 yards out.

Tallas brought the Bison to within one early in the second half, putting the ball just inside the right post off an assist from senior Morgan DeMike.  Tallas has now scored in two straight games and has three goals this season.

Small notched her second of the day for Idaho in the 67th minute, scoring off a pass from Erica Hart to give the Vandals a 3-1 lead.

The Bison responded four minutes later with a goal from freshman Jaclyn Scanlan, who scored off a rebound from a shot by senior Laura Wagner.

NDSU continued to push for the equalizer, registering six shots in the final 20 minutes.  Senior Abbey Moenkedick took a corner kick with 15 seconds remaining, but two shots from Tallas and a shot from Michelle Gaffaney were blocked as time ran out.

The Bison outshot the Vandals, 18-9, but only held a 6-3 edge in shots on goal.

After playing the first six games of the season on the road, the Bison return to Fargo to take on Montana on Friday, Sept. 16 at 4:30 p.m. in the first of six consecutive home games.
