Two Late Goals Send South Dakota Past NDSU, 3-2

Box Score

FARGO, N.D. - Lauren Bennett and Erin Bello each scored second-half goals for South Dakota in a soggy Summit League match at the Ellig Sports Complex on Friday evening, helping the Coyotes to a 3-2 victory over the North Dakota State women's soccer team.

The loss brought an end to NDSU's 18-game home unbeaten streak, as well as its eight-game home winning streak.

North Dakota State (6-9-0, 3-3 Summit) took an early 1-0 lead when senior Shannon Brooks deflected a Tristyn Walczak shot past USD goalkeeper Jen Shaefer in the 11th minute.

South Dakota (2-11-3, 1-4-1 Summit) pulled even at 1-1 in the 27th minute when Bello hit the crossbar with a free kick and Rebecca Sparkman headed the rebound in for a score.

NDSU sophomore standout Anisha Kinnarath gave the Bison a 2-1 lead on a free kick from nearly 25 yards out in the 53rd minute, but the lead would not last.

South Dakota rallied late to steal the victory, as Bennett scored on a long-distance shot in the 70th minute, and Bello snuck a shot past Bison goalkeeper Sierra Bonham from the right side in the 79th minute.

NDSU racked up a season-high 23 shots and matched its season-high with 10 shots on goal, easily outpacing the Coyotes in both categories. The Bison also tallied eight corner kicks to USD's zero.

"It's a tough loss," said NDSU head coach Mark Cook. "I thought we played some of the best soccer we've played all year. We had better possession and more chances, but soccer is a game sometimes where the better team doesn't always win. We've done that to teams this year, and this time we were on the other side of it."

Kinnarath notched seven shots and four shots on goal, matching her team-leading single-game bests from earlier this season.

NDSU is now 26-2-1 in home games since Sept. 1, 2009.

The Bison will host Kansas City at noon on Sunday, Oct. 21, for Senior Day. NDSU seniors Shannon Brooks, Holly Christian, Brooklyn Dyce and Jordyn Wallenborn will be honored prior to their final home game at the Ellig Sports Complex.

"You need a short memory," Cook noted. "We have to come back tomorrow and get right back on the training field. I'm not worried about this team coming back. They've had a lot of heart and a lot of desire this year, and I'm convinced they will come back with a great effort on Sunday and get a result."
