Box Score WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - Zach Wentz hit two RBI doubles and Kyle Kingsley got the last five outs in relief for the win as North Dakota State beat Chicago State 2-1 in the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational on Thursday, March 15, at Chain of Lakes Stadium.
Wentz finished 3-for-4 at the plate and Tim Colwell was 2-for-3 with a stolen base and two runs scored for North Dakota State, which improved to 11-5 with its fifth straight win. Chicago State fell to 0-14.
NDSU starter John Straka pitched 7 1/3 innings with six hits, two walks and eight strikeouts. He left a 1-1 game in the eighth after a leadoff single and sac bunt, but Kingsley (1-1) got a ground ball and a fly ball to end the threat.
The Bison went ahead in the bottom of the eighth when Colwell bounced a leadoff single through the right side, moved up on Nick Colwell's sac bunt, and scored on Wentz's fifth double of the year down the left-field line.
NDSU opened the scoring in the bottom of the first when Tim Colwell hit a leadoff single, stole second base, moved to third on the wild throw, and scored on Wentz's double down the left-field line.
Chicago State tied the game in the fifth when Aveeno Nasiloski hit a one-out single, moved to second on a wild pitch, and scored on Albert Carpen's two-out single through the middle of the infield.
Carpen was 3-for-4 for the Cougars and starter A.J. Reyes went six innings with four hits, two walks and four strikeouts. Reliever Eric Hall (0-2) allowed two hits and struck out one over the final two innings for the loss.
North Dakota State is scheduled to close out its road trip against Akron at 2 p.m. ET on Friday, March 16, at Lake Myrtle Park in Auburndale, Fla.
