GRAND FORKS, N.D. – Senior
Taylor Braun scored a career-high 34 points, but the North Dakota State men's basketball team lost at in-state rival North Dakota 95-77 on Sunday, Nov. 24, in front of a sellout crowd of 3,142 at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center.
North Dakota (2-1) received 32 points and 10 rebounds from senior guard Troy Huff. UND shot 51 percent from the floor for the game, outpacing a 41-percent shooting performance by the Bison.
Four NDSU starters –
Kory Brown,
TrayVonn Wright,
Marshall Bjorklund and
Lawrence Alexander – fouled out of a contest that saw a combined 77 free throws attempted.
NDSU (2-3) shot just 1-for-12 from three-point range. UND's 95 points were the most by a Bison opponent in regulation since South Dakota scored 105 on Feb. 20, 2004.
North Dakota scored the first six points of the game and opened up a 15-6 lead on a Huff three-pointer just over five minutes into the contest. NDSU battled back to tie the game at 19-19 on a dunk by Wright with 9:36 to play in the first half, but the Bison were unable to take a lead.
UND led 44-35 at halftime and outscored the Bison 51-42 in the second half.
Braun made 18-of-22 free throw attempts, giving him the second-most free throws made in a game in school history.
Lawrence Alexander grabbed a season-high eight rebounds for NDSU.
NDSU will travel to Santa Clara, Calif., next to take part in the Cable Car Classic, playing host Santa Clara on Nov. 29 and either Rice or Rider on Nov. 30.
