
Bison Move Into Second-Place Tie With 58-54 Win at Fort Wayne

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Lawrence Alexander scored 20 points to lead North Dakota State to a 58-54 win at Fort Wayne in Summit League men's basketball Saturday, Feb. 9, at the Hilliard Gates Sports Center.
Marshall Bjorklund notched his first double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds and Mike Felt scored nine points in the second half including three free throws in the final 20.4 seconds.
Frank Gaines scored 16 points and Luis Jacobo scored 14 for IPFW, which went 9-for-16 from the 3-point line to stay in the game. Jacobo and Isaiah McCray each made three from the arc.
North Dakota State improved to 19-6 overall and moved into a tie for second place with South Dakota State at 10-3 in The Summit League. Fort Wayne dropped to 10-16 overall and 3-9 in the league.
There were 12 lead changes in the game, but NDSU never trailed after Brett VandenBergh and Felt scored their first points of the night on back-to-back 3-pointers that made it 41-36 with 11:42 left.
IPFW was within 48-47 at the 4:12 mark, but Bjorklund snared an offensive rebound that opened up Felt for a 3-pointer and a four-point lead. Bjorklund took a charge on defense two possessions later and the Bison went up 55-49 on an Alexander layup with 1:46 to play.
Felt's two free throws with 20.4 seconds made it 57-54, and VandenBergh had a chance to make it a four- or five-point game but missed two foul shots with 5.4 seconds left.
VandenBergh tipped his short miss toward the sideline and forced IPFW's Joe Edwards out of bounds after collecting the loose ball. Felt went to the foul line with 2.2 seconds left and made one shot after the inbounds play.
NDSU shot 19-for-47 from the floor for 40.4 percent and went 14-for-22 at the foul line. IPFW finished 17-for-37 overall and went 11-for-16 at the foul line.
The Bison committed a season-low five turnovers and scored 12 points off 10 turnovers by IPFW. NDSU outrebounded IPFW 30-24 and had 20 second-chance points off 13 offensive boards.
North Dakota State returns home to host first-place Western Illinois at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 14, and IUPUI at 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, at the Bison Sports Arena.
