Six-Run Eighth Lifts Southeast Missouri State Past North Dakota State, 13-7

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Southeast Missouri State took advantage of three errors to score six runs in the eighth inning and avoided a series sweep with a 13-7 win over North Dakota State in college baseball Sunday, Feb. 24.

The game was tied 6-6 into the seventh inning when the Redhawks (6-2) took their first lead on a leadoff single by Derek Gibson and a two-out double by Andy Lack against NDSU reliever Parker Trewin, who dropped to 0-1 with the loss.

Lack was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored and SEMO leadoff hitter Jason Blum finished 3-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored.  Reliever Hank Williams Jr. struck out three of the six batters he faced in the seventh and eighth to up his record to 2-0.

North Dakota State (3-3) got a solo home run from Blake Turbak in the first inning, back-to-back doubles from Tim Colwell and Jon Hechtner to plate three runs in the second, and a sac fly from Paul Funk to make it a 5-1 game in the third inning.

Andy Lennington got his second run-scoring hit in the third and Cole Bieser hit a two-run single in the fourth to pull the Redhawks within 5-4.  A balk with runners on the corners in the fifth inning gave NDSU a 6-4 lead, but SEMO tied it in the sixth on a two-run single by Matt Tellor.

NDSU starter Trevor Jaunich allowed four runs on 11 hits with no walks and five strikeouts over five innings.  SEMO starter Will Spitzfaden allowed six runs on eight hits with one walk and no strikeouts in four innings.

The Bison scored six of their seven runs with two outs, and the Redhawks scored their first seven and 10 of their 13 runs with two outs.

North Dakota State plays Minnesota at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27, at the Metrodome before continuing on to Tennessee-Martin for a three-game series beginning Friday, March 1.
